Ava Carr Architect Don’t just live in your house, Love your house! But never would have…

Every construction project costs a significant amount of money for materials and labor.

I am the architect for you if you are unsure your project is large or complicated enough to need an architect but still want to make sure it gets done well. My goal is to find the simple solution for your project, the idea that is so obvious once I’ve drawn it that you’ll feel like you should have figured it out for yourself…. I believe you should spend a small fraction of that expense on an archi

tect to make sure you get the most out of your money. Old buildings get issues as they age and need care and maintenance to put things right. All too often people spend money building around problem areas - patching the same leaky roof again and again or putting new kitchen cabinets in a kitchen that will never function well. Let me help you look at your building with a fresh set of eyes. I am a registered architect with over 20 years of experience and have worked on new construction, renovations, commercial buildings and homes. I would like your project to benefit from my experience.

Last week I had some happy clients cook dinner for me in their new outdoor kitchen.
Some of the design challenges on this project were:
* designing a roof that met the house without impacting any of the upper floor windows
* Creating the kitchen workspace above the steps to the basement below the screened porch
* Stepping down from the screen porch to the on grade patio in a user friendly way.

Brian Locke of Blocke Builders did a fantastic job.
It is so much fun to see completed projects!

I worked with my client to convert this small 3 bed / 1 bath ranch house into a 2 bed / 2 bath house for their retirement years.
The tiny kitchen was enlarged slightly by removing the tight and steep interior stair to the basement. A new stair was added to the back of the house so that it can also serve as the stair from the new covered porch to the yard.
The existing finished space in the basement was reworked to provide a comfortable guest space that can be accessed from the interior stair or from the yard.

This project is a great example of one of the ways i can work with clients to help them make their dreams reality.
This client brought me his ideas for a home he planned to build for himself. I refined his ideas, suggested he cantilever the structure on the upper floors to create adequate space for the stair and rooms without increasing the building foundation size.

My total time billed for this project was 23 hours.

I have been having fun creating 3D views of a recent house design.
I am still working on colors and textures but being able to roam around the house inside and out helps me and my clients make design desisions.

Sometimes just adding a small space can change how your home feels and functions!

On this project the client wanted to enclose the existing small porch and remove the existing sliding glass doors. I suggested that they take advantage of an exception in zoning setback rules and cantilever 2’ past the existing porch framing to create a 10’ deep room. This extra space allowed for more furnishing options and the addition of more windows.

The new space is so nice the clients decided to place the office in an upstairs bedroom and use this space to relax. The sunny alcove transforms the entire main floor of the house!

Not sure how to get started with a renovation, addition or guest house?
Not sure what is sensible, or even possible, on your lot?
I can help!

I have met with numerous clients to:
Review the zoning restrictions and setbacks on their lots.

Explain the definition / requirements of an ADU (Accessory Dwelling Unit).

Talk about the building code difference between ADU's, duplexes, and triplexes.

Show floor plan examples of past projects that are similar to what can be done on their lot.

Estimate in a very general way potential construction costs

Quickly evaluate the practicality of adding onto their existing house or finishing out their existing basement

I can do an evaluation like this in just a few hours time.
Message me or send me an email and let me help you move from dreams to reality.

Another addition in progress!
This client wanted to enclose the small deck on the front of their home with an office and create more room at the entry and master bath. The office is open to the main living / dining area to create a more spacious interior.

The exterior finish and deck should be added soon.

A 2 story addition was designed to match the existing house.
This client needed to add a small elevator because all of the bedrooms ae on the upper floor and there was no room to expand outward. She also wanted to add a sunroom to the main level.
I suggested making the addition two stories. This allowed her to keep one bedroom as a guest room and expand the third, very small upstairs room that we were adding the elevator to, into a comfortable office / yoga studio.
Brookshire Builders did a great job integrating the new interior and exterior with the existing.

I would like to help you "Plan" your future!
Right now I am helping some clients as they work to downsize to their future retirement home. They have talked to me about what they see their life looking like in a few years and I have provided them with sketches as they consider the future renovations to the ranch style home they bought in North Asheville.
I have had a “Master Plan” for my home in West Asheville since I bought my home 25 years ago. The plan has served as a guideline for the various repairs and renovations I have made over the years. It keeps me from spending money repairing things I am going to change shortly and helps me decide what to prioritize.
If you would like a Master Plan for your home or business send me an e-mail!
