Today we are officially half way between Winter Solstice and Spring Equinox. Although these can be some of the coldest days of winter, the daily increase in sunlight is a gentle reminder of spring just around the corner.

From now until early May can be a tricky time for gardeners when we see variable weather. Early spring can give plants false hope of warmer days to come.

That is why we focus so much on selling late season varieties. Picking a variety that blooms even a couple weeks later can save your crop from those unpredictable late frosts.

If you haven't already, there are just over two weeks left to place your online pre-order at www.plantsforeveryone.com

Stay safe and warm out there! Hope you enjoy the winter view on our property, and the dog who refuses to come inside when snow is on the ground 🤍

Have you ever planted a live stake?

Live stakes are 1-3ft cuttings off the branches of dormant trees/shrubs that should take root
when pushed into suitable soil. Live stakes are the most efficient way to restore streambanks
and prevent further erosion on steep slopes.

Last year we gave away 2,000 lives stakes at the sale to support Hurricane Helene recovery
and restoration. We were thrilled to start a conversation with so many of you on why live stakes
are so great. In this process we also learned that it is really difficult for home gardeners to get
access to live stakes in manageable quantities.

This is why we have live stakes available for
both pre-order and the general sale this year!
We love live stakes and think they are our most effective method to repair streambanks from
Hurricane Helene. Here are some of our reasons:

● Cost and Time Effective: Less expensive than rooted plants and because you don’t have
to dig a hole, the planting happens more quickly.
● Quick to Establish: The roots develop more quickly than starting from seed.
● Erosion Control: The roots develop more quickly and hold soil more quickly, preventing
erosion.
● Restores Habitat: The quick establishment of these plants build riparian buffers, creating
food and shelter for lost wildlife habitat.

This year you can get 3 live stakes for just $5, that’s less than $2 a cutting! We have three
varieties available: american elderberry, arrowwood viburnum, and greytwig dogwood. All are
quick to establish, great for erosion, and beneficial to wildlife.Let’s all keep motivated to continue planting natives after Hurricane Helene to protect our
wildlife and prevent the takeover of invasive non-native species!

Have you been pruning your blueberry bushes? We have been meaning to for years, and this
year we finally did it! Pruning blueberry bushes becomes important, because without pruning,
your fruit will keep getting smaller as the plant continues to branch. Since we are not experts on
pruning, we will share the resources we found most helpful.
1. If you don’t have a book on orchard management, please consider adding The Holistic
Orchard by Michael Phillips to your collection. This book is our first stop when pruning
any fruit trees or bushes. Stay tuned as we hope to show y’all some clips of pruning our
orchard as well!
2. Aside from The Holistic Orchard, the video linked below with Bill Cline is extremely
informative. Bill Cline is the blueberry expert for North Carolina. You can find tons of
great info from him on the NC state extension website.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wkFhMwoiUDQ
We hope this inspires you to join us in learning something new, pruning blueberries!
There are still 8 varieties of blueberries, including the Pink Lemonade mentioned in this video in
stock and available for pre-order on our website!
