Pawpaw seeds germinating! After 3 months in the fridge, 3-4 weeks by the wood stove in a bucket does the trick to wake them up. Who needs a heat mat! Most things I'm not too fussed about getting started early but pawpaws are worth the extra effort. The additional amount of growth in the first year is huge, 2-3x more. They require a lot of heat time to germinate.

My life is currently full of boxes, packing tape, sawdust and plant roots.
I've got about 600 plants in boxes to be shipped out tomorrow! Very glad I only have to do this twice a year😅. Each year it gets a bit more manageable (less stress, better prepared, and better system flow) and less manageable (more orders, more species and varieties to keep track of).

Proper hard freeze last night!
Some gardeners might be bummed but I'm psyched. Plants get the message and go dormant more quickly. More time to dig and transplant bare root trees before the ground freezes! 🥶

May have left these carrots in the ground too long 😅
If you can grow vegetables you can definitely grow trees! I personally find growing trees much easier most of the time.

Also planted some garlic and elephant garlic today. Still have a little elephant garlic available through the nursery if anyone is interested. 🧄

Sweet cicely (Myrrhis odorata) seeds from !

Sweet cicely is an herbaceous perennial plant with seed pods that taste like candy licorice! They are very adaptable and shade tolerant. The leaves and roots can also be eaten.

I sowed these today to let them stratify natural over the winter. Very excited to see how they do next year.

Maypop opening! (Passiflora incarnata)
I've still got a few maypops available through the nursery if anyone is interested.

I've been loving these flowers this year. My kids are super vigilant about them and keep picking them and eating them as soon as they bloom. Maybe next year a few flowers will sneak past them and I'll get some fruits.🙂

Want to grow kiwis? 🥝🥝

You might want a trellis!
They're vigorous vines that can give up 50-100 pounds of fruit per plant.
This is a t style trellis with 5 strands of 9 gauge wire hanging a little over 6 ft from the ground. I used wire vises on the ends which permit the wire to only move one direction so it stays tight. At the end the post is anchored into the ground with some wire and t posts to keep the post from leaning with the tension of the wires and the weight of the kiwis. For posts I used 8-10" diameter cherry which is rot resistant. There are other options this is just what I had available. For one of the posts I just used a tree, probably the most rot resistant posts you can use! I'm thinking about growing trees next to the posts to use when the cherry posts eventually rot. Excited to get some kiwis growing on here!

Maypop aka hardy passionfruit (Passiflora incarnata) seeds.

I'm dealing with lots of different kinds of seeds this time of year in preparation for the growing season, and I keep being struck by how infinite the variation is between them, and how I can sense them being alive and waiting to spring into action.

Or more simply put, seeds are cool.
