A Southern Garden in Late Spring

Another moment for this set (4) of frames.

So far I’ve used them for Christmas, Valentines, Easter, and now summer.

I simply cut images from vintage books and place them in the frames in front of the previous pictures.

The frames stay out all year and can be used over and over again.

Two years ago, this area was completely covered in trumpet vine.

I spent months solarizing the ground just to get a starting point. Then came graph paper sketches, tiny perennial plugs, constant rearranging, and a lot of second-guessing.

For a long time, it honestly looked worse before it looked better.

Now the garden is finally starting to settle in and fill out the way I hoped it would. The funny thing about perennial gardens is that you can’t rush them. You plant for a future version of the space and trust it will eventually come together.

The audio felt accurate because yes… I complained through most of it.

There are a handful of things that make me feel rich in life, and fresh flowers in the house are one of them.

This summer’s zinnia garden is beginning to grow, and I’ve loved watching these seedlings slowly turn into the flowers that will eventually fill jars on the kitchen counter and bouquets to share with friends and neighbors.

This year, I partnered with Eden Brothers to grow several varieties in my Southern cutting garden, and I purchased a few extra seed packets to share with one of you.

I’m hosting a small zinnia seed giveaway over on Instagram this week for anyone who would like to enter. 🌸 https://www.instagram.com/belleantiquarian/

Zinnias may be one of the hardest working flowers in a Southern garden.

They thrive in the summer heat, bloom continuously through the season, attract pollinators, and fill the house with armfuls of flowers for months. But a few simple decisions can make a tremendous difference in how productive they become.

This year, I partnered with Eden Brothers to grow several zinnia varieties in my garden, and I shared some of the most helpful things I’ve learned about growing zinnias for cut flowers in the full article on Belle Antiquarian.

How to Grow Zinnias in a Southern Cutting Garden 🌸

A few months ago, this space was bare soil and seed packets. Now the garden is beginning to fill in for summer, and I’ve been documenting the process for a new article on Belle Antiquarian all about growing zinnias for cut flowers in the South.

In the article, I’m sharing:
• when to plant zinnias in Southern climates
• the varieties I’m growing this year
• tips for spacing, pinching, and harvesting
• and the simple things that make zinnias one of the most rewarding flowers to grow at home

I partnered with Eden Brothers to grow several of the zinnia varieties featured in this garden this season, and I’m also sharing a printable Southern Zinnia Planting Guide.
