Hurricane Season is Here - Is Your Home Prepared?
Hello friends, this is Katherine from JTR Recovery, I’ve been watching Hurricane Francine's path and it looks like it's set to land in Louisiana. As someone who’s seen the aftermath of these storms firsthand, I can’t stress enough how important it is to ensure your home is ready for hurricane season. At JTR Recovery, we urge all residents in the storm's path to take immediate action to protect their property and review their insurance coverage.
Trust me, you don’t want to be scrambling at the last minute. Here are some steps the JTR team recommends:
Insurance Check:
Dust off that policy and give it a good read. Verify that your insurance policy provides adequate coverage for potential wind and flood damage.
Deductible Reality Check:
Here’s something that catches people off guard - familiarize yourself with your policy's deductibles, particularly the hurricane deductible. This is typically a separate deductible that applies specifically to damage caused by hurricanes.
Hurricane Deductibles: These are often calculated as a percentage of your home's insured value rather than a fixed dollar amount. For example, if your home is insured for $300,000 and you have a 2% hurricane deductible, you'd be responsible for the first $6,000 of a claim.
Check Flood Insurance:
Standard homeowners insurance policies typically don't cover flood damage. It's important to verify if you have separate flood insurance. Even if you're not in a high-risk flood zone, flooding can occur in unexpected places during a hurricane.
Act Now
With Hurricane Francine getting close to Louisiana, time is of the essence. Here are some immediate steps to take:
Document Your Property: Grab your phone and take a video walk-through of your house. Take photos and videos of your home and belongings as they are now. Trust me you will thank me later.
Secure Outdoor Items: Bring in or tie down any outdoor furniture, decorations, or equipment. Don’t be the person with a lawn chair flying through their neighborhood window!
Prepare an Emergency Kit: Include essentials like water, non-perishable food, medications, and important documents. You know the drill.
Know Your Evacuation Route: If evacuation orders are given, know where you'll go and how you'll get there.
