Why core drill instead of surface-mounting a fence post?

On this installation, our 6-inch core drill opens the pavement so the post hole can continue into the soil below. That creates access for a below-pavement footing instead of mounting the post to the existing concrete with a welded base plate and anchors.

The practical benefit is that the footing can be designed for the fence and ground conditions, rather than depending on the existing pavement as the mounting base. There’s also no surface base plate or exposed anchor group around the post.

That doesn’t make core drilling automatically stronger. The footing dimensions, soil, post, materials, and expected loads all matter. A properly engineered base plate can also be a durable solution. Choosing the right detail for the site is the important part.

A commercial fence project starts with getting the scope right.

At this collision repair center in Atlanta, GA, Hawk Fences is installing 1,700 linear feet of 8′ black chain-link fence with three strands of barbed wire. All posts are set in concrete. The job is still in progress, and here's how it’s coming together.

A fence should work with the yard it’s built in.

For this Decatur, GA project, the homeowner prioritized closing gaps beneath the fence. We followed the changes in ground elevation with this 6-foot, pressure-treated dog-ear privacy fence, keeping the bottom closer to the terrain.

The black PostMaster steel posts add structural support without the rot, twisting, warping, or cracking associated with wood posts. Their black finish also makes a clean accent against the wood.
