Many people don't know how an architect generates a design. There are many steps. Here is one progression starting with rough sketch, then ink sketch, then final design of an exterior for a 13,000 square foot custom residence. There were many iterations of the design(s) in between, and also with the floor plans, but these show a quick summary of the process involved in the exterior. There are many reasons why “missing middle” homes are not able to be built in America. Some of them are due to costs imposed by building codes and others by zoning. Here is an article that compares designs created in compliance with American and European building codes. It’s a good beginning for a conversation on how we need to adapt our requirements for new buildings to allow for more options in American multifamily home design and affordability.

Even if developers in the US and Canada built more two-, three-, and four-bedroom apartments, they’d be so big and inefficient that you probably couldn’t afford one anyway.

Designing Theaters. Teatro Olimpico a theatre in Vicenza, northern Italy, constructed in 1580–1585. It was the final design by the Italian Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio. A reproduction of a classic Roman theater in an indoor setting. The forced perspective of the Roman streets in the background is simply incredible.
