Most people pick grout last. But it’s actually one of the decisions that changes the entire mood and style of a space.
Here’s what each combination actually does:
Contrast + 1/8” → The boldest choice. The pattern becomes the statement.
Contrast + 1/16” → The grid shows up but stays delicate. Graphic without being heavy.
Tonal + 1/8” → Structured but soft. You can see the pattern without it being loud.
Tonal + 1/16” → The grout disappears. The tile reads as one continuous surface and the room reads as sleek, modern, and seamless.
A few things to keep in mind:
- Thinner grout requires more precision (and usually rectified tiles) during install
- Wider joints are more forgiving with handmade or artisan tile
- Tonal grout can make a small space feel larger
- Generally, larger tiles pair well with wider grout lines, while smaller tiles look best with narrower lines
There’s no wrong answer, but there’s definitely a right answer for your tile and your space.
