"How much does a custom pool cost?"

It's the first question every homeowner asks.

Unfortunately, most of the answers you'll find online have absolutely nothing to do with Northern California.

A pool in Texas isn't built on decomposed granite.

A pool in Arizona doesn't deal with Placer County permitting.

And a pool in Florida isn't being engineered for the soil conditions we see throughout Auburn, Granite Bay, Loomis, Grass Valley, Nevada City, and the Sacramento foothills.

That's why you can find websites quoting $60,000-$90,000 for a gunite pool while local proposals come in significantly higher.

They're talking about different markets, different standards, and different realities.

We recently published a detailed 2026 guide breaking down:

✔ Realistic pool costs in Placer & Nevada County
✔ What drives pricing up (and down)
✔ Why two similar-looking pools can have dramatically different costs
✔ The hidden differences between proposals
✔ What homeowners should know before comparing bids

If you're researching a pool project, this guide will save you a lot of confusion.

"How long does it take to build a pool?"

It's one of the first questions we get asked.

The short answer?

For most custom pools in Placer and Nevada County, about six months from design to first swim.

The better question is:

What happens during those six months ❓

✅ Engineering
✅ Permits
✅ Excavation
✅ Steel & Rebar
✅ Plumbing & Electrical
✅ Inspections
✅ Gunite Application
✅ Curing
✅ Tile & Coping
✅ Decking & Hardscape
✅ Equipment Installation
✅ Startup & Water Balancing

Some of those phases are measured in days. Others take weeks. And a few of the most important phases are periods where construction appears to stop—but critical work is still happening behind the scenes.

We recently put together a complete phase-by-phase guide showing exactly what homeowners can expect during a custom pool build in Auburn, Rocklin, Roseville, Granite Bay, Lincoln, Grass Valley, and throughout the Sierra foothills.

If you're planning a pool and wondering what the process actually looks like, this guide will help set realistic expectations from day one.

Most custom pool projects in Placer and Nevada County take 5–7 months from design to first swim. Dal Pino Quality Pools breaks down every phase of construction — what happens, how long it takes, and what causes delays.

The most expensive part of a bad pool isn't the original contract.

It's fixing the problems years later.

Every pool looks beautiful on the day it's finished. The plaster is smooth. The tile sparkles. The water is crystal clear.

What you can't see is what determines whether that pool performs for the next 30 years:

✔ Pipe sizing and hydraulics
✔ Rebar placement
✔ Gunite thickness
✔ Concrete strength
✔ Structural engineering
✔ Soil conditions

These aren't the things homeowners get excited about during the design process. They're also the things that separate a pool that's still performing decades later from one that requires costly repairs.

In our latest article, we break down the hidden differences between bids, why the lowest price is often the most expensive choice long-term, and the questions every homeowner should ask before signing a contract.

Before you compare pool proposals, read this first.

The lowest pool bid is rarely the best value. Dal Pino Quality Pools exposes the structural shortcuts, undersized plumbing, and missing engineering that turn a cheap pool into an expensive problem.

Would you hire a surgeon based solely on the fact that they have a medical license?

Probably not.

You'd want to know their experience. Their training. Their track record. Their commitment to continuing education.

The same principle applies when you're investing $150,000, $250,000, or more into a custom swimming pool.

Most homeowners don't realize there's a significant difference between holding a contractor's license and earning the highest professional certifications available in the pool industry.

In this article, we explain what the PHTA Certified Master Pool Builder & Design Professional designation actually means, why so few builders have earned it, and how it can help homeowners evaluate who they're trusting with one of the largest improvements they'll ever make to their home.

If you're considering building or renovating a pool, it's worth understanding the difference.

The PHTA Certified Master Pool Builder is the highest credential in the pool industry. Dal Pino Quality Pools explains what it requires, how rare it is, and why it matters when building a custom pool in Northern California.

Should you remodel your pool—or start over?

It's one of the most common questions we hear from homeowners throughout Sacramento, Granite Bay, Roseville, Rocklin, Folsom, Auburn, and El Dorado Hills.

The answer isn't always obvious.

Some aging pools simply need new plaster, tile, coping, and modern equipment to feel brand new again. Others reveal structural issues once renovation begins that can change the conversation entirely.

And then there's a third option many homeowners don't even know exists: building a brand-new pool inside the shell of the old one.

In this article, we break down:

✔ When a remodel makes sense
✔ When a new pool is the better investment
✔ What hidden issues can be discovered during renovation
✔ How pool construction standards have changed over the past 40 years
✔ The surprising "pool inside a pool" approach that can save significant demolition costs

Before you spend tens of thousands of dollars on a renovation, make sure you understand all of your options.

There's a unique feeling that comes from returning to a pool you built twenty years ago.

Sometimes it's the original family calling us back for a replaster, equipment upgrade, or complete remodel. Other times it's a new homeowner who discovered we built the pool and wants the same level of craftsmanship for its next chapter.

Many pools throughout Granite Bay, Folsom, Auburn, Lincoln, and El Dorado Hills were built during the late 1990s and early 2000s. Today, those pools are reaching the age where plaster, equipment, tile, coping, and other systems need attention—not because they were built poorly, but because every pool has components with a finite lifespan.

In this article, we explain:
✔ How long pool plaster really lasts
✔ Warning signs your pool may be overdue for renovation
✔ When a cosmetic refresh is enough
✔ When structural repairs may be required
✔ Why variable speed pumps can dramatically reduce operating costs

Most importantly, we discuss how to determine what your pool actually needs before committing to a renovation budget.

If your pool is 15-25 years old, this is worth a read.
