Recently it has been really dry. We recommend watering the lawn between 4am and 10am three times a week, and definitely NOT in the evening as damp grass at night can cause fungus. Avoid watering in the hot mid day as it is just too hot and thus not effective.
Measure your water output instead of guessing how long to run your sprinklers. Measure the exact amount of water your lawn receives using a few empty tuna cans or straight-sided Tupperware placed around the yard. Run your sprinklers for exactly 15 or 30 minutes.
Use a ruler to measure the depth of the water collected. Calculate how long it takes to collect 0.5 inches of water, and use that as a baseline to program your watering zones. It is best to apply 1 to 1.5 inches per week. So perhaps run the sprinkler 3 times a week for the amount of time it took to collect the .5 inches.
Check for Moisture and Stress - using the screwdriver test or the footprint test as follows. The Screwdriver Test: To ensure the water is going deep enough, push a long screwdriver into the soil after watering. It should easily slide 6 to 8 inches into the ground where the roots are. This might be difficult in areas where the soil is hard and compact. We can improve that with aeration - a simple, and not expensive process. The Footprint Test: A healthy lawn bounces back when stepped on. If you walk across the grass and can see your footprints (the grass stays flat), it is a sign your lawn is thirsty. If these tips sound too difficult or are not working - call us at 609-502-5363.
Finally - mow properly to the best height and with a sharp blade. This is our specialty so if you need lawn mowing, please call 609-502-5363. You want to leave the grass a little longer in the hot months. And do not mow too short - it is better to mow more often than make it too short at one time.
We can help improve your lawn. The best times to seed are May and early June or September.
