Doing some sketches of Midcentury Modern houses here in Austin, MN. Since moving into my own Midcentury house (not the one pictured here though), I have been lucky enough to meet people who know where these gems are hidden. I’ve grown particularly interested in the Midcentury homes built around 1956-1959 here in Austin. This is one of my favorites - built in 1958, the structure and facade follow a very simple grid logic while the window placements and dramatic overhangs emphasize the horizontality of the house. Wooden beams extend from the interior to the exterior and past the roof overhangs. Corner windows are made even more special by an additional pane of glass above that lies in the same plane as the beams, which further emphasize the sweeping horizontal lines of the design.

Over the past few years, I've spent a lot of time thinking about the ways cultural identity is carried across generations—through architecture, stories, traditions, etc. so I'm excited to share that I had the opportunity to participate in Threads of Us, a portrait exhibition by Sanyu Creative Studio opening June 19 at The Residency in Minneapolis.

The exhibition explores cultural identity, belonging, and the ways we carry home with us through clothing, objects, traditions, and memory. Through portraits of immigrants, diaspora communities, and Indigenous peoples in Minnesota, it highlights the many ways people navigate heritage, place, and contemporary American life.
Since my Fulbright research explored connections between cultural heritage, migration, and identity, this project felt especially meaningful. Being in conversation with others about the stories, traditions, and objects that connect us to our histories has been both eye-opening and deeply affirming.

I'll be attending the opening reception on June 19 (and wearing my bunad), and I'll also be participating in the community dialogue on June 27. Both events are free and open to the public.
I hope you'll join us in celebrating the many threads that shape who we are and where we come from.

Great tips from people who preserve old houses in Norway. All of these are applicable here in the US. I highly encourage anyone interested in renovating their old house to read this list, ask the questions, find your people, and take inspiration from international examples - they are really inspiring and have a lot of experience with very old houses. ❤️
