When pruning larger branches, always cut just outside the branch collar (that slightly swollen area where the branch meets the trunk). Cutting flush with the trunk removes the tree's natural defense zone, leaving it vulnerable to decay and disease.
That collar tissue contains cells that seal the wound and fight off infection. Respect it, and your tree heals stronger and faster.
