KRDB KRDB is an architecture and development firm in Austin, Texas specializing in design-build projects. In this pursuit, we design and build.

KRDB's primary mission is to make modern design accessible, both economically and intellectually, to the broadest cross-section of the population. We believe in the transformative power of design as it relates to the built environment. Inspired space, like a successful work of art, increases consciousness, and heightens ones sensitivity to the surrounding world. Whether it is a modest dwelling, th

e local park or a town hall, we believe in architecture’s ability to inspire people, and enrich the actions and lives of communities. We endeavor to make architecture available to the community at large. The buildings we execute grow out of a careful consideration of place and intention. Each project brings with it a different set of interests and expectations, needs and desires, challenges and questions. We listen, and design in response to our client’s desires. The client, site and program create the milieu in which a project is conceived, developed and executed. KRDB is a vertically integrated firm, having acted as developer, designer and builder. With a depth of knowledge informed by multiple disciplines, our design process is enriched and our buildings provide a value proposition that manifests both financially and experientially. As most of our clients come to us seeking combined services that are both aesthetically superior and financially limited, we have developed a process that provides the client with a detailed overview of the trajectory of the project. A preliminary schedule of design meetings is provided, outlining the goals of each project phase, the deliverables from KRDB, and the expectations of the client. Providing our clients with this understanding of the process at the outset ensures a project that maximizes accommodation of as many goals as possible. KRDB's areas of work include civic and cultural, commercial, entertainment, planning and urban design, residential single-family and residential multi-family. Feel free to get in touch with us with any questions. We'd love to hear from you!

Continuing the infill lot typology explorations. We have been working on a two-story ADU that would have tuck under parking and were approached by someone with a hillside site where it works perfectly. 1300 ft.² two bedroom 2 1/2 bath.

We’ve been studying what small-lot infill could realistically look like under Austin’s HOME Phase 2 ordinance. This test fit uses 35’ x 90’ lots (3,150 SF each) on a one-acre parcel, which yields 12 units per acre.

For context, most traditional Austin single-family neighborhoods sit closer to 4–6 units per acre. So this is at least double — sometimes triple — the typical density, but still delivered as fee-simple homes.

The key move isn’t just shrinking the lots. Instead of giving every house its own curb cut, we’re consolidating access with joint driveways and shared drive aisles. That reduces paved area, keeps the streetscape greener, and makes the sidewalk experience feel continuous rather than driveway-dominated.

HOME 2 technically allows lots down to 1,800 SF, but in practice we’re finding that 35 feet of width gives you better proportions, workable parking geometry, and outdoor space that people will actually use. It feels intentional rather than squeezed.

These would be built as volumetric modular through ma modular — which is what makes this density repeatable. Factory-built units, predictable costs, shorter timelines. The goal isn’t just to show that higher density is allowed. It’s to demonstrate that it can be delivered at scale without losing neighborhood character.

Still testing the edges of where the sweet spot is — but 12 units per acre, done this way, feels like a meaningful shift for Austin.

A smarter approach to urban infill.
In Austin, a new local housing policy (called HOME) allows more homes on traditional single-family lots. But density alone isn’t the goal—how you arrange those homes matters.
For mid-block sites, three identical units on the street can create real challenges: circulation, parking, privacy, and outdoor space. Our solution is a side-by-side townhouse strategy paired with an elevated rear ADU with parking underneath.
•Two ~1,800 SF townhomes engage the street.
•The ADU lives quietly at the back.
•And the townhomes still get real backyards.
Thoughtful density > maximum density.

Three homes. One lot. Zero compromise.

This latest HOME infill project shows what’s possible when progressive land-use policy meets design-forward modular construction. By pairing Austin’s HOME ordinance with factory-built precision from StudioBuilt, we were able to deliver high-quality, modern housing at an urban scale that actually fits the neighborhood.

We are creating a series of videos on modular design and construction and episode #1 is hot off the presses! Go inside the factory and see how the fabrication of our Robbins Place modular project happened. Joe Butler and the Studiobuilt team at work.

This video is an in-depth look at how modular houses are fabricated in the factory. Thanks to Studiobuilt and Mark for giving us the tour!
