If you are new to growing Nepenthes, you may run into some behavior that looks worrisome. Dying pitchers, yellow leaves, red spots, and powdery stuff are all (usually!) normal and harmless.

When pitchers and leaves die off, that’s usually just an indication that the plant has taken all the energy it can from those sources and is letting go of them, so that it can direct its energy into new growth.

Red speckled spots like the ones shown here are an expression of the fungus that naturally lives in all Nepenthes. If a Nep gets stressed (like when it’s getting rehoused or put in more intense light), the fungus will make an appearance. But you’ll see, that the rest of the leaves are normal and green—an excellent sign of health and recovery from stress!

Lastly, some species do create a powdery substance that acts like sunscreen—not to be confused with powdery mildew! But of course, if you’re ever not sure, send us a picture and we’ll let you know!

Let us know in the comments if you’re new to growing Nepenthes and if you’ve encountered these yet!

The Disa tripetaloides is an unusual terrestrial orchid from South Africa. It grows along the edges of streams and rivers. These orchids are a great addition to any bog collection as their love of wet media allows them to grow happily in the same conditions. This plant is easily reproduced by dividing offshoots of stolons that grow beneath soil. We have found that they grow well in Highland conditions kept in a tray of water. ļæ¼

To make this plant yours, ļæ¼head to our website this weekend and place your bids! The rare plant auction run from Friday May 29th at 6pm CDT h til Sunday May 31st at 11:59 CDT

And don’t forget to see what else is up for grabs…we’ve got a Cephalotus, a couple of Nepenthes, some Monstera, a Margravia…

Good luck!

We got a lot of comments asking about how to pot and repot Pinguicula, which soil to use, bog bowls and other unique builds, so this week, we put those questions together to take a look at Ping root structure, potting and repotting, the substrate we use, and a few ideas for creative builds, like bowls or planting them directly onto rocks. Pings are so charming, easy to grow, and incredibly versatile. We hope this helps you and your Ping family thrive! Let us know in the comments which carnivorous plant care tips you want us to hash out next!
