Heyden Black Walker from our office — and Chair of Safe Streets Austin — spoke at Austin City Hall on October 10 during the Vision Zero 10-Year Commemoration, reflecting on a decade of progress in Austin’s commitment to eliminating traffic-related deaths and serious injuries.
Over the past decade, Austin’s Vision Zero program has:
➡️ Added 320+ miles of new or upgraded sidewalks
➡️ Installed 500 pedestrian crossings
➡️ Implemented lighting, intersection redesigns, and speed management strategies
➡️ Achieved a 38% reduction in serious crashes in improved areas
While traffic deaths decreased from 117 in 2022 to 97 last year, city leaders emphasized that every fatality represents a preventable loss — and the mission continues until Austin reaches zero deaths.
