For this project, the kitchen backsplash has become a focal point: a fully custom starburst built from Ann Sacks tile remnants.

What makes it special is that no two installations are ever exactly the same. The small pieces come from larger tiles cut at the factory, so the final arrangement depends on the materials available, the proportions of the space, and the hands laying it out.

That feels true to the spirit of CG&S. Custom work is not only about choosing something beautiful. It is about building something specific: to the client, to the room, and to the way the home will actually come together.

The clients knew early on that they loved tile. After seeing this as a sample at , they wanted to give it a place where it could really hold the room.

Once the backsplash became the focal point, the CG&S design team kept the surrounding details quieter so the starburst could shine.

Chaos on Corral, 2026 edition.

The game of Washers has deep roots at CG&S. Long before this year’s bracket, there was already a court on Corral Lane, a few well-worn rules, and plenty of strong opinions about how to throw a good disc.

The game goes back to the early days of the company, when founder Clarence Guerrero played on the same grounds where the CG&S office still stands. Over the years, it has become less about who wins and more about the excuse it gives everyone to step outside, mix departments, talk a little trash, and enjoy each other’s company.

This year’s tournament kept that spirit going: random teams, clutch throws, and a lot of laughing between rounds.

Violet sits at the edge of what we can see.

It belongs to the visible spectrum, but it also opens into a whole family of colors that are harder to define: lavender, plum, mauve, indigo, pink, and purple tones that shift between warmth and coolness, softness and depth.

That in-between quality is part of what makes violet feel so personal in a home.

It is not chosen by accident. In tile, textiles, wallpaper, art, lighting, or one unexpected detail, violet can bring imagination, mood, play, and a little bit of risk into a space.

When it works, it reminds us that a home does not have to fit neatly into one category. It can hold contrast, character, and individuality all at once.

Blue can set the tone of a room without taking it over.

As a cool tone, it can make a space feel calmer, clearer, or more expansive depending on the shade and where it is used. That is part of why blue shows up so often in homes. It can carry color, depth, and personality while still feeling easy to live with.

A pale blue can soften the light. A deeper blue can add depth and structure. In tile, cabinetry, walls, furniture, or textiles, blue has a way of bringing color into a home without making the room feel busy.

Blue gives a space a sense of steadiness. It can create a place to gather, pause, focus, or reset, while still leaving room for personality.

Green feels familiar before it feels bold.

We are used to finding it in the places that give us shade, growth, and a sense of relief. That connection to the natural world is part of why green can feel so easy to live with, even when it shows up in a strong way.

In a home, green can soften a room, ground a palette, or pull the landscape outside into the spaces where daily life happens. A lighter green can feel fresh and open. A deeper green can feel rich, quiet, and more dramatic.

When green works, it gives the eye somewhere to rest. It reminds us that a home can hold personality and calm at the same time.

Yellow has a way of bringing a room into focus.

It reflects light, brightens dark corners, and can make a space feel more optimistic. Even a small amount can change the way a room reads.

The trick with yellow is restraint. Too much can flatten a space, but the right shade brings energy without losing warmth, giving the room a brightness that still feels lived in.

It gives a home a sense of lift, reminding us that joy can be part of the design language too.

Orange brings warmth into a room without taking it over.

Like red, it carries energy, but it often brings that energy in a softer, more relaxed way.

In a home, orange can add humor and play without feeling too formal. When orange works, it gives a space a sense of ease. It tells you the home was not designed to disappear into the background, but to make room for warmth, personality, and the people moving through it.

Color is personal.

It can be quiet or bold, familiar or unexpected, comforting or full of nerve. It is one of the ways a home begins to reflect the people who live there.

Red is not always the easiest color to bring into a space. It can feel intense, even a little intimidating, which is why it often appears in carefully chosen moments: tile, wallpaper, furniture, lighting, cabinetry, or one detail that changes the whole room.

But when red works, it brings character. It brings warmth. It brings play. It tells you the space was not designed only for resale or neutrality, but for the people who actually live there.

This week, we’re looking at color across CG&S projects, one shade at a time.

The future of the trades starts with students like these.

We joined Austin NARI and the Austin NARI Workforce Development Foundation as scholarships were awarded to local students pursuing their next chapter in the trades.

The Clarence Guerrero Memorial Scholarship Award is especially meaningful to CG&S. It is named for Dolores Davis’s father, who began his career as a carpenter, following in the footsteps of his father and his father before him.

For Dolores, a founding member of the Workforce Development Foundation, the award carries that family history forward by helping students take their own first steps into the trades.

Congratulations to this year’s scholarship recipients! Your hard work deserves to be celebrated, and we’re proud to have been there for the moment.

Special thanks to , the Austin NARI Workforce Development Foundation, Leander ISD, and Hays CISD for continuing to support students, trades education, and the next generation of builders.
