For 60+ years, this doorway stood silent behind layers of change. Today, it opened again.

Built in 1894 in Austin’s Hyde Park neighborhood, the F.T. and Belle Ramsey House still has so many stories to tell — and uncovering moments like this is why I love historic preservation. Honored to be part of bringing this beautiful home back to life, one discovery at a time. ✨🏡

Grateful for the craftsmanship and care of Four Oaks Construction, and for a wonderful client with the vision to thoughtfully revive this historic house for another generation.

Once condemned. Now award-winning.
From slated for demolition to honored for excellence in rehabilitation.
Sending tremendous thanks and gratitude to our fearless client, partners, and every member of the team who made the rehabilitation of the Martindale Motor Company Building possible. It is truly a preservation miracle.

We love finding surprises at our projects. Can you imagine the glow of a coal fire on this beautiful bronze repoussé? Lion’s head motifs were used in many of the finest homes of the Victorian era.

O'Connell Architecture and our team are so proud to have worked on the restoration of the Martindale Motor Company Building in Martindale, and for our client, Maury Domengeaux. Maury saw an opportunity here to really make a difference in a small town, and saved this large, condemned building from demolition. Shout out to the structural and civil engineering team at Gessner Engineering - there aren't many structural engineers in the country that would have taken this project on; Thomas Gessner and Tori Whittman were perfect for the challenge. Kudos to the general contractor, Perry & Perry Builders of Rockdale, for their fearless work. Cheers to Wilson & Girgenti for MEP engineering design and Hardy Heck Moore for writing the National Register nomination for the downtown district. It took a large, dedicated village to bring this beautiful building back to life. And it was all made possible with the use of the state and federal tax credits, administered by the helpful team at the Texas HIstorical Commission.

Our office at the Baker School suffered some storm damage the other night. Roofers came to figure out the problem, but it wasn’t enough. Lori, Ryan and I were working late tonight when the storm blew through Hyde Park, and water started pouring through the windows and ceiling. If we had not taken some early precautions and then been there to respond quickly, we would have come in tomorrow morning to complete devastation. As it is, all of our computers are ok, no more drawings were lost tonight, and we can recover. All good thoughts welcomed as we put everything back together. Thank you!

Today I’m filling in for my former partner, John Volz, up at the Ball-Eddleman-McFarland House, owned and cared for by Historic Fort Worth. The home is an astonishing showcase of beautiful materials: patterned black slate with copper ridge caps, finials, and elaborate moldings, Pecos red sandstone and Roman brick pointed with dark red mortar. It’s been about 15 years since my last project here, and it’s wonderful to be back.

The stunning wood grain of Texas curly pine is caused by irregular growth patterns in the tree, resulting in unique swirls and curls that give each piece of wood a one-of-a-kind beauty. We will get to visit this beautiful grain more often as we start a project at the North Evans Chateau, or Chateau Bellevue very soon.
