Tomorrow, August 11th, is the 46th anniversary of my second first date with Miss Deborah Harris. It involved an hour-long motorcycle ride on Hwy 264 from Nags Head to Swan Quarter North Carolina on a pitch-black night. We had dated for a summer when we were both 16. This was six years later, and I had not seen her since. I was not slick enough to have planned it, but we watched the Perseid Meteor Shower for the entire ride back through nothing but swamp and woods. The Lord gave us a fantastic show! We were married roughly 5 months later. I still love my spunky Hyde County girl with all of my heart. Maybe we will take in the show one more time tomorrow night. 🥰

Walk out into the dark tomorrow night with your loved one and behold God's fireworks show.

I know these photos do not show the whole story. Suffice it to say, with a knee in a brace, an elbow in a brace, and on my hands and knees a lot I have w**ded my out-of-control garden. The chickens have had a big time with all of the grass and such I dropped in there run area. (accomplished two things, gave them fresh greens and covered the mud so I could walk through without slipping and sliding). Beds have been cleared ready for Fall planting. That week plus of hot steamy rainy weather will put you behind on w**ding every time.

Pleasant blessing to find the little box turtle hunkered down in one bed. Current family here on the compound are all full up with dogs, cats and dragons so everyone passed on welcoming a box turtle into the menagerie.

Some have expressed interest in the Orange Clivia. I have 15 in 3 gallon pots and 6 in trade gallon pots. Remember this is a shade lover and a cold hater.

Avery is out of surgery and with a typical Avery smile. All went well. I thank you Father.

Nursery will be closed tomorrow. I have to go to Charleston to bring Avery and Jessica back home. They waited all day today for a MRI. Hopefully he can have one early tomorrow. Christy took them down but she has to be back for work tomorrow. Tag team care giving family around here.

Fall garden here we come!
Planted:
Burgundy Delight lettuce
All Season Romaine blend
Red Salad Bowl lettuce
Buttercrunch lettuce
Snowball Y Improved cauliflower
Green Gems brussels sprouts
Flash collards (from saved seed)
Georgia collards
Waltham 29 broccoli

I will protect these plants with insect netting. Bugs are really really hungry in August. Unprotected they don't stand a chance in my past experiences.

Starting now gives them a chance to get established to a good size before any cold weather. Last year I started later and hit that cold winter not big enough to harvest. They survived the cold but bolted when the weather warmed. Gonna try again. Remember I come from hardheaded dairy farmer stock.

Yesterday was propagation day. Took cuttings of wild bergamot (Monarda fistulosa) Purple salvia (purple version of black and blue salvia), African Blue Basil, Serissa (Snowrose or Snow in Summer), Tuscan Blue Rosemary, Sweet Lavender (the variety that does best for us here).

Spent the afternoon sitting outside of the bedroom where our grandson Avery was sleeping. Avery was a preemie and has had his share of trouble. He has a shunt to help regulate the fluid pressure in his brain. Yesterday was a bad headache day for him. I guess as a protective measure his body shuts down and he sleeps when these are going on. They can also make him nauseous to the point of throwing up. I was sitting within ear shot in case that happened. He is 11, tough, and the sweetest child. He woke up about 5:30 hungry and thirsty and with a smile. Typical Avery, he had to go water and feed the dogs. Remember this sweet boy in your petitions to our Father in Heaven. Deliverance would be a miracle, but one more good day would be wonderful.

this morning's jobs:
Do some w**ding in the garden.
Make seed starting mix for fall crops.
Hands and knees w**ding of half of the new U shaped drive flower bed I put in this summer. Nut grass, bermuda, dollar w**d and just a few Florida betony. It's called be persistent or you have wasted your time.🧑‍🌾
3 hours and I am drenched and my ole knees hurt. Taking a break.
