There has been one confirmed case of New World Screwworm in a canine in Lea County, New Mexico (shown on the map in the attached graphic). The canine is recovering.

What should you do? Keep calm, monitor your animals closely, and stay up-to-date on screwworm in your area. If you suspect screwworm infestation, go to the official website which can be found online at screwwormnm.org and click on the button labeled "Report Here".

Human cases are rare but serious. Report human infestations immediately to the New Mexico Department of Health at 1-833-SWNURSE (1-833-796-8773) or TEXT NMDOH (66364)

RED FLAG WARNING IN EFFECT FROM NOON TO 9 PM MDT MONDAY DUE TO STRONG WINDS AND LOW RELATIVE HUMIDITY FOR THE WEST CENTRAL MOUNTAINS... ...RED FLAG WARNING IN EFFECT FROM NOON TO 9 PM MDT TUESDAY DUE TO STRONG WINDS AND LOW RELATIVE HUMIDITY FOR THE WEST CENTRAL MOUNTAINS AND THE NORTHWEST PLATEAU... ... .Strong southwest winds with low humidity, hot temperatures, and deep mixing will increase the risk for rapid fire spread over far west central New Mexico, including Gallup, Monday before expanding to much of northwest and west-central NM Tuesday. Any dry lightning strikes that occur over west central New Mexico Monday may result in fire starts that rapidly spread Tuesday.

Warning in effect from noon to 9 PM MDT Tuesday.

* AFFECTED AREA...Northwest Plateau (Zone 101).

* TIMING...From noon to 9 PM MDT Tuesday.

* 20 FOOT WINDS...Southwest winds 20 to 25 mph with gusts up to 40
mph.

* RELATIVE HUMIDITY...Relative Humidity between 5 to 13 percent.

* IMPACTS...Any fires that develop will spread rapidly. Outdoor
burning is not recommended.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Please advise the appropriate officials or fire crews in the field of
this Red Flag Warning.

The NM Interstate Stream Commission (ISC) will be conducting the La Plata and Lower Animas River Basin Crop Survey from Wednesday-Friday, June 3-5, 2026. The annual crop survey is conducted to document New Mexico’s use of Colorado River Basin water in compliance with the 1948 Upper Colorado River Basin Compact. The La Plata and Animas River Basins are the focus of the June Crop Survey. Staff will be driving slowly, documenting crop types and irrigation methods for irrigated agriculture in one state vehicle with a G-plate license plate. The vehicle may be seen stopped on the shoulder of the road while ISC staff identify irrigated tracts of land. The ISC is a sister agency to the New Mexico Office of the State Engineer (OSE). Please note, the annual ISC Crop Survey is not conducted for the purpose of OSE water rights compliance, it is done to support interstate compact compliance within the Colorado River Basin.

From the US National Weather Service Albuquerque New Mexico :..RED FLAG WARNING IN EFFECT FROM NOON TO 8 PM MDT FRIDAY DUE TO STRONG WINDS AND LOW RELATIVE HUMIDITY FOR WESTERN NEW MEXICO... .Dry south-southwest winds with peak gusts of 35 to 45 mph ahead of a storm system over the Great Basin combined with low minimum humidity values in the upper single digits to low teens and dry fuels will result in a greater risk for rapid fire spread from any new sparks along and west of the Rio Grande Valley and Northwest Plateau Friday afternoon.
