Sunrise Resort on Hood Canal is a project we have been working on for several months and are about to start building permits for. Sunrise Motel has occupied this site for ages, but the new Owners (my client) want to bring it up to the modern era. It will have 24 units including an Owners Suite plus a Diver Service area for for pre and post dive preparation, a Common Area and coffee bar. Construction will be phased in to allow for continuous operation of the resort.

This is a house we just received a permit for on Bainbridge Island in the Port Madison neighborhood. We're hoping to start construction in May when the site dries out a bit.
Main floor is 844 gsf with kitchen, dining room, living room, study, mud room and main entry plus a 356 gsf garage.
Second floor is 1,200 sf with two bedrooms, two bathrooms, laundry room and tv room.
Third floor is also 1,200 gsf with another bathroom and wide open area.
Exterior materials are corrugated metal, painted board and batt, weathered cedar and black trim.

If you are interested in a custom home, let me know! We help people figure out how to develop sites they own or help them find suitable sites and can develop designs that fit your needs, desires and budgets.

A long time client of mine asked me to design a house for him down in Baja, Mexico using shipping containers. He sent me a drone video of the site...amazing! The house would sit on the top of a large dune overlooking a long beach that stretches several miles in both directions on the Sea of Cortez. When his partner saw this, he jokingly asked where his is so I put his in to the north.

Three 40' HC containers are used for this house and its connection to the site. The Lower one representing the Land is for the living room and kitchen/dining area; the Upper one stacked on the end of the Lower one and pointing 90º away with the Master Suite in it is the Sea and the one set vertically for the connecting stairwell is the Sky. The Land unit points out towards Los Tesos while the Sea unit points out towards Punta Arena.
Both overhang the dune.

The decks above provide sunscreening for the units so they don't heat up in the sun as well as providing large decks for entertaining and enjoying the views. The deck surface would be perforated fiberglass panels that allow the sunlight to be filtered, but not eliminated. It also allows the breeze to blow through and the sand to fall through on those days the wind is blowing sand around.

I can't imagine how nice it would be to wake up with a fresh breeze blowing across your sheets and the beach and sea laid out before you 180º. Muy Bueno!

After 31 years of having my architecture office in Seattle, I have finally moved it out and will have my office on Bainbridge. I’m not retiring in case your wondering, just consolidating.

My first office starting Jan. 1, 1991 was on the 9th floor of the Terminal Sales building at First and Virginia and was a shared collaborative space with 2 other architecture firms, an interior design firm, a graphic arts firm and an online retailer.

In 2000 when my staff needs grew too big, I moved to street level at 125 Stewart St where I remained for 16 years until the building was to be torn down to make room for a high rise.

I then moved in 2016 to 440 Virginia St also at street level and have been there until last Thursday evening when I moved the last of my stuff out.

It’s been a good run Seattle…thank you!!

A couple years ago, we started a project called the Confluence Building in Carnation, WA. That project is a mixed use 3-story building with retail on the ground floor, office on the second and residential apartments on the third.
That project led to a second project in Carnation...a six unit apartment building called The Anderson Apartments.
Towards the middle of October, I was asked to design the new Carnation City Hall and Community Center.

Below are images of all three.

During my second year of Architecture School in 1981, I did a project and rather then just put my name on it, I put the future architecture firm name I hoped to have..."Hummel Architects". I used a Bumblebee for the logo because "Hummel" means "Bumblebee" in German.
On Jan. 1, 1991 my dream of owning my own firm officially came true and I started "Jeffrey J. Hummel Architects, pc" which was shortened to just "Hummel Architects, pc" a few years ago. The logo you see in the corner of this post is my "Box and Bar" logo that I've had for the last almost 29 yrs, but that changes today with the launch of my revised website:
www.hummelarchitects.com

In addition, I'm also launching two other revised websites for my other two businesses: www.toadhollerwoodworks.com and
www.bc-lines.com

Please check all these out and let know what you think...your opinion matters.

Finally, I want to thank all the people over the years that have supported me in architecture. My success is only because of you my clients, my consultants and my friends and family.
Happy Holidays to all and may the New Year bring all of you the best life has to offer.

With Kind Regards,

Jeffrey J. Hummel, Architect NCARB
