New Beech Leaf Disease Treatments
Beech leaf disease has been spreading rapidly. As implied by the name, the disease attacks beech trees, one of the most commonly found trees in our area. Beech leaf disease is caused by microscopic worms called nematodes. The first outward sign of infection is discolored stripes between the veins of impacted leaves. As the disease progresses, the tree will show signs of stunted growth and yellowing leaves. Symptoms worsen over time and the tree can die in just a few years after the initial infection.
Given the devastating nature of this disease, the best course of action is to start by keeping your beech trees as healthy as possible. Soil care to address nutrient deficiencies and improve organic matter content is an important first step. Recently, published research has demonstrated the effectiveness of either foliar treatments or root-flare infusion to manage the disease depending on the circumstances.
