DID YOU KNOW……. the process of leaves falling from a tree is called abscission.
This occurs when a specialized layer of cells, known as the abscission layer, develops at the base of the leaf stem, causing the leaf to detach from the branch as the tree responds to changing seasons, typically in autumn, by reducing hormone production that holds the leaf in place.

As daylight hours shorten and temperatures drop, the tree produces less auxin, a hormone that helps maintain the connection between the leaf and the stem, leading to the formation of the abscission layer.

This layer of cells acts like a "separation zone" where the leaf easily detaches from the branch.

The breakdown of chlorophyll, the green pigment in leaves, reveals other pigments like carotenoids (yellow and orange) as the leaf senesces, creating the vibrant fall foliage.

By shedding leaves, the tree conserves energy during winter months when resources are scarce and reduces the risk of damage from heavy snow accumulation.

🎃 Ball Ground Botanical Garden Update! 🎃

Most of the pumpkins from Halloween in the Garden were donated to Flynn Fields Rescue in Jasper, where the pigs and goats enjoyed their tasty snacks! We're happy to see the decorations put to good use. 🐷🧡

And stay tuned—our Christmas decorations are coming soon! 🎄✨

We had such a great turnout for Halloween in the Garden yesterday! The weather was a little hot, but that didn’t stop everyone from enjoying themselves. The trunk-or-treaters were a hit, and the face painting station had a long line thanks to Favel, our talented Garden Club member, who worked wonders with face paint. There were so many fun games, and it was a great day for all. We’re so glad we can give back to our amazing community and create these special moments together. Thank you to everyone who came out and made the event such a success!

🙅🏼‍♀️💦 With no rain recently, I am much more aware of my appreciation of drought tolerant plants (when established).

Knock Out roses just won’t quit. Sasanqua camellias are showing out beautifully. And ornamental grasses are quite tolerant. My pink muhly grass gets prettier every year!

What are some that are looking good in your yard right now?
