Cooler nights are on the way, and if you're wondering whether it's time to pack up your tower for the season, I have good news for you: winter doesn't have to mean the end of your garden! In fact, cool weather is when so many of our favorites taste their very best. A little frost actually makes kale and collards sweeter, spinach stops bolting, and lettuce stays crisp and mild.
I put together a quick-start guide on the blog with the simple habits that keep your roots happy and your pump safe when temperatures dip:
- What to harvest now (looking at you, basil and tomatoes) before the first frost hits
- Easy ways to hold onto warmth by moving closer to the house, insulating your reservoir, or using a frost blanket or pop-up greenhouse
- Your freeze-night game plan, including why a full reservoir and running your pump overnight make such a difference
- Which cool-season greens and herbs thrive in chilly weather
We grow seedlings year-round in the greenhouse, so whenever you're ready to swap in your winter greens, we've got plenty of healthy starts waiting for you. And don't forget to hug your tower every day!
