If you're reading this from a Capital Region patio right now, the cloud you're trying to ignore is most likely a blackfly hatch.

The full Upstate NY bug calendar runs in three waves:

• Blackflies — second week of May through mid-June. Peak: the hour before sunset. The season opener you keep losing.

• Mosquitoes — July through early August. Peak: 7:30 to 9:00 PM. The dinner-party hour. Yes, the bugs picked it on purpose. They've been peaking at dusk for longer than humans have been having dinner parties.

• Biting midges (no-see-ums) — mid-August through early September. Small enough to slip through standard porch screening. The reason your ankles itched on the drive home from that perfect August dinner.

Out of roughly 20 weeks of outdoor season in the Capital Region, 14 or 15 of them carry meaningful bug pressure during the most desirable outdoor hours. The hours you most want to use the patio are the hours the bugs most want to use it too.

Repellents work for hikes, not for hosting. Citronella is mostly aesthetic. Yard spray helps but doesn't fit every household. Screened porches keep bugs out but turn the patio into a screened room year-round.

The fourth-wall solution — motorized screens that close against bugs on demand and disappear the rest of the time — is the only one that doesn't trade your patio for your bug protection.

Ten minutes.

That's how much time in nature it takes to measurably lower your cortisol, drop your blood pressure, and shift your nervous system out of stress mode and into recovery. (Peer-reviewed scoping review, 2020. Replicated across multiple labs.)

Most Capital Region homeowners have access to that dose every single morning. The patio is right there. The coffee is in hand. The trees are at the edge of the property.

The problem is the access keeps breaking.
