Congratulations to the design team behind The University of Arizona Scottsdale Center, which was recently honored with an IIDA Southwest Chapter Design Award for Branding Excellence!

Located in the heart of Old Town Scottsdale, the Scottsdale Center reimagines a once-dark office suite as a light-filled embassy connecting the university’s Tucson campus with its growing Phoenix-Scottsdale community. Incorporating bold brand colors and storytelling elements, the immersive, flexible environment welcomes prospective students, alumni, and partners into the evolving Wildcat story. Jurors praised the project for its finishes and experiential elements and said the space "feels immersed in the brand without ever being too much."

Happy National Nurses Week to the incredible nurses who show up every day with skill, compassion, and dedication!

We’re proud to design spaces that support the next generation of healthcare workers. This week, Associate Principal Jason Hearn had the honor of attending the University of Tennessee, Knoxville National Nurses Week Reception at our newly completed UT Medical Nursing Building. From the very first sketch to the finished building, it was designed to be a warm and welcoming home where future nurses can learn, grow, and prepare to change lives.

This project was designed in collaboration with McCarty Holsaple McCarty Architects and Interior Designers. Project photos by Pete VonDeLinde. Learn more: https://ayerssaintgross.com/work/project/university-of-tennessee-knoxville-nursing-building/.

At , the Kington Plaza and Outdoor Learning Spaces extend the academic experience beyond the classroom. Designed to promote belonging and student success, the landscape supports everything from informal study to group discussions and campus gatherings. Four learning nodes accommodate a range of class sizes and teaching styles with fixed and movable furniture while social coves, hammocks, and custom-designed boomerang benches provide spaces for social gatherings and recreation.

The design team incorporated sustainable practices throughout the project, including recycled slate chalkboards and some of the first bioswales on campus. Drawing inspiration from the campus’ location in Iowa’s tallgrass prairie region, the plant palette includes dominant uses of switchgrass, prairie drop seed, and blue gama grass along with other native plants like coneflower, oxeye sunflowers, and Aspen trees.

The spaces in between, including shared spaces like lobbies, hallways, or entrance thresholds, are rarely the destination. But they’re often crucial areas for moments of welcome and connection. In honor of , we're celebrating how experiential design can create spaces that connect people and place. Through intentional use of color, texture, lighting, signage, and spatial organization, our designers create environments that spark curiosity, encourage interaction, and strengthen pride and belonging.

Featured projects:
Bold environmental graphics at Coppin State University, the The University of Arizona Scottsdale Center, and the Missouri Botanical Garden Jack C. Taylor Visitor Center.

At Ringling College of Art and Design, Cunniffe Commons is a vibrant outdoor hub that supports student life through flexible, shaded, and highly social places. The dining hall’s footprint artfully accommodates the preservation of mature oak trees on the site, providing an intimate exterior courtyard for outdoor dining. Exterior gathering spaces allows students to connect to nature and the lush Florida landscape in their own backyard.

Earth Day is a reminder that design carries responsibility to protect our planet and environment. At Ayers Saint Gross, this responsibility shapes every decision we make, how we design, and how we connect with the natural world.

Today we’re sharing projects that exemplify our approach to resiliency and sustainable design, including the renovation and renewal of Arizona State University's LEED Platinum Hayden Library, the transformational Harbor Wetland at the National Aquarium, and the landscape-embracing Semans-Griswold Environmental Hall at Washington College.

At Denison University's Silverstein Hall, the landscape is designed as an extension of the residential experience. Outdoor spaces encourage interaction and community-building by providing two common area spaces — a café-adjacent active quad that connects to the pedestrian spine, and a passive green sitting north of the residential housing. Large, hand-picked boulders act as both retaining features and casual seating, and an outdoor stage was included to support live entertainment. Green infrastructure is integrated throughout the entire site, including vibrant rain gardens of low-maintenance, native plants.

What if your post-occupancy evaluations measured meaning, not just satisfaction? Join Principal Shannon Dowling at Society for College and University Planning (SCUP) Mid-Atlantic for a hands-on workshop exploring how to evaluate design impact on comfort, safety, belonging, confidence, learning, and relationships with inclusive, evidence-based metrics that connect outcomes to design intent. All participants will leave with a collaboratively built library of metrics, readings, and methods for measuring meaningful results.
