Congratulations to the entire design team on the official opening of the new Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center Horizon Tower! Friday’s ribbon-cutting marked the culmination of years of planning, collaboration, and dedication to creating an exceptional healthcare environment for the community.

The Horizon Tower's thoughtfully designed spaces enhance healing, privacy, and comfort, bringing next-level emergency and critical care services to a growing region that needs them most.

Mahan Rykiel Associates was proud to be part of the Wilmot Sanz team, providing landscape design for the healing gardens, entrance plaza and fountain, and rooftop gardens. The rooftop plantings create meaningful views of nature for patients and families, supporting wellness and recovery. Research continues to demonstrate the positive impact that access to nature and restorative landscapes can have on patient outcomes.

The hospital celebrated the occasion with a photo booth, where Mahan Rykiel team members Steve Kelly and Katherine Ackerman were joined by our newest intern, Ziyang Liu, for a fun moment recognizing this important milestone.

What a great day for Howard County!

On Friday, Governor Wes Moore and Howard County Executive Calvin Ball joined community members to officially open Phase 6 of Blandair Park. This exciting new phase includes the largest skatepark in Howard County, new pickleball courts, and basketball courts—amenities that were immediately filled with kids, families, and residents eager to play.

Mahan Rykiel is proud to have been part of the team helping bring these new recreational opportunities to life. MRA has been involved since the master plan! Seeing people of all ages enjoying the park from the moment it opened is exactly what great public spaces are all about.

We’re grateful to for the opportunity to collaborate at the upcoming A4LE-Association for Learning Environments Northeast Region Conference.

Mahan Rykiel Associates was proud to sponsor the Maryland Chapter of SMPS Hard Hat Tour at Rash Field Phase II on Thursday.

It was a great opportunity to give industry colleagues a behind-the-scenes look at one of Baltimore’s most transformative waterfront projects as construction enters its final stages. Mahan Rykiel has been involved with Rash Field since 2015, helping shape a vision that reconnects Baltimore residents and visitors to the Inner Harbor through recreation, nature, and community gathering spaces.

Phase II will add a nature play area, fitness zone, pickleball and beach volleyball courts, an amphitheater, passive open space, the Pride of Baltimore II Memorial, and numerous waterfront amenities that build upon the success of Phase I.

Thank you to SMPS Maryland for organizing this event and giving marketing professionals a first-hand look at construction work. A special thank you to our Project Manager, Mick, for helping to lead the tour and sharing the design vision behind the project, as well as to our partners at the Waterfront Partnership of Baltimore and Plano-Coudon for discussing the collaborative effort required to bring a project of this scale to life.

We look forward to celebrating the opening of this remarkable public space later this summer and seeing Baltimoreans enjoy everything it has to offer.

At the Maryland Chapter-American Society of Landscape Architects Awards Gala, we were honored to present the annual Mahan Rykiel Diversity in Landscape Architecture Scholarship to Artemis Maziarski — a promising student and emerging leader in our profession.

Established by Mahan Rykiel Associates, the $2,500 scholarship supports women and minority students pursuing degrees in landscape architecture as part of our ongoing commitment to helping broaden representation and elevate underrepresented voices within the field.

For more than 40 years, Mahan Rykiel Associates has believed that diverse perspectives make design stronger, more thoughtful, and more meaningful.

These projects are very different in scale and setting, but both reflect our belief that landscape architecture can strengthen connection — between people, nature, and community.

At Strathmore Square, the landscape draws together the natural character of Rock Creek Park, the creative energy of Strathmore, and the connectivity of Metro. Cascading roof terraces, planting, and material transitions extend the feeling of the park into the development, creating outdoor spaces that support gathering, exploration, and everyday life.

For Inner County Outreach, the landscape was shaped directly by mission — supporting families through education, wellness, reflection, and community. Set within 29 acres of streams, forests, and rolling terrain, the campus creates spaces for learning, recreation, healing, and intergenerational connection while preserving and celebrating the site’s history.
