How do you design a new visitor center at 14,000 feet? Timothy A. Schuler spoke with Alan Reed for The Architect's Newspaper about our design for the new Pikes Peak Summit Visitor Center that puts the focus on the stunning landscape that inspired the lyrics of “America the Beautiful.”
Working in collaboration with Colorado Springs-based RTA Architects, Inc., we created a deferential, durable, and sustainable building that orients visitors within the landscape, accommodates exhibits that allow for a deeper understanding of the history and significance of Pikes Peak, and provides for the essential needs of dining, refreshments, and shelter. GWWO has designed a visitor center for Pikes Peak in Colorado that features locally sourced quartzite sandstone and a new boardwalk system.
