How do you design a new visitor center at 14,000 feet? Timothy A. Schuler spoke with Alan Reed for The Architect's Newspaper about our design for the new Pikes Peak Summit Visitor Center that puts the focus on the stunning landscape that inspired the lyrics of “America the Beautiful.”

Working in collaboration with Colorado Springs-based RTA Architects, Inc., we created a deferential, durable, and sustainable building that orients visitors within the landscape, accommodates exhibits that allow for a deeper understanding of the history and significance of Pikes Peak, and provides for the essential needs of dining, refreshments, and shelter. What are interpretive centers and why do they matter?

GWWO Design Principal Alan Reed explains in The Architect's Newspaper how interpretive centers, unique in the contemporary architectural repertoire, can foster productive and inclusive discourse and help us mediate between the past and present. Read the full article here: https://bit.ly/3KlgRHS

If the experience has taught us anything, it is that we must find a way to keep our history in view, while also putting it in perspective.

While her exact birthdate is unknown, Harriet Tubman was born 200 years ago this month on Maryland's Eastern Shore. To honor her life and legacy, events are planned around the region, including two days of programs at the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Historical Park and Visitor Center.

On Saturday, GWWO’s Chris Elcock will present the visitor center’s design concept, “The View North,” exploring how the design immerses visitors in the story of Harriet Tubman, taking them on a powerful metaphorical journey revealing her courage, selflessness, and spirit.

What do laser beams and the Jefferson Memorial have to do with one another? Washington Post explores causation theories behind the discoloration of the dome and a high-level view of the strategies, including high-tech lasers, our team, Building Conservation Associates, Inc., used to restore its original shine. The roof restoration is the first of three concurrent efforts by GWWO to improve the memorial’s physical condition and experience for the site’s 3.5 million annual visitors. The iconic Jefferson Memorial was falling victim to an implacable enemy: Nature. Conservationists have managed to control an unsightly infestation of biofilm - for now.

Last Wednesday, Berkshire Elementary School was buzzing with excitement as Baltimore County Public Schools celebrated the school's official opening with a ribbon cutting ceremony. Replacing an old 1954 facility on the same site, the new school offers a variety of interwoven collaboration spaces, including a large learning commons on each floor, breakout spaces, a technology-rich media center, presentation and pinup space on and below the central stair, and a rooftop classroom, to support multiple modes of instruction. Congrats to BCPS and the project team, including Gipe Associates and MK Consulting Engineers. https://bit.ly/3biQmn4

The new Morgan State University Calvin & Tina Tyler Hall has been named AIA Maryland's 2021 Public Building of the Year, the organizations most prestigious award, and received an Excellence in Design Honor Award. The jury praised the design, stating:

“This striking project makes a bold statement about the design aesthetic of university architecture, particularly as sited on an HBCU campus. The goal of the project was to bridge the historic neoclassical style academic quad and the modern campus commons, and that bridge was traversed unapologetically with intention and finesse. ... This stately design succeeds in every dimension.”

Congratulations to Morgan State University and the entire project team! Read more: https://bit.ly/3aORZsy

Last Friday, NY State Parks & Historic Sites and GWWO celebrated the groundbreaking of the new Niagara Falls State Park, USA Welcome Center. The center, opening in Spring 2023, replaces an outdated and cramped facility with a new immersive experience, inside and out. Nestled into the sloped site, the center places the awe-inspiring beauty of the Niagara River Gorge and immense power of the falls at the forefront. Like a giant sheet of water, the expansive glass facade maximizes views and offers continuous connections to the falls throughout the lobby and exhibit areas. https://bit.ly/3mEZZSw

The National World War I Memorial in DC has received an Award of Merit from NAIOP DC l MD Chapter for Best Institutional Facility. Serving a dual function as a space of commemoration and as an urban park situated within the Pennsylvania Avenue National Historic Site, the design harmonizes these two functions with great sensitivity, providing an expanded commemorative identity while at the same time respecting the historically significant park design and offering a variety of uses. Congratulations to the World War One Centennial Commission, Grunley Construction Company, Inc., Joseph Weishaar, DAVID RUBIN Land Collective, and the entire project team.
