Ode to Oak:
Why the Kitchen’s Most Misunderstood Wood is Making a Massive Comeback
The inspiration for this post came from a bottle of Scotch.
During a recent dinner party, I pulled out a bottle of single malt Scotch to share with friends. One of my guests, read the label aloud with genuine admiration
"...smaller quarter casks intensify maturation for depth and richness of flavour, create layers of glazed orchard fruit and rich vanilla. Finishing with notes of ripe barley and oak spice. All in a perfect blend."
As he spoke, my mind immediately jumped away from the whiskey and straight into my ongoing kitchen design. Because anyone who has ever tried to finish modern oak cabinets knows that oak isn’t just "wood-colored." Just like a fine Scotch, it is a complex canvas of hidden layers and subtle tasting notes.
In its raw state, white oak carries deep, tricky undertones of olive greens, cool grays, and soft tans. And if you don't know how to navigate those layers, trying to finish your cabinets can quickly turn into a design hangover.
There was a time when mentioning "oak kitchen cabinets" would make design enthusiasts shudder. We all remember the heavy, honey-colored, hyper-grained cathedral doors of the 1980s and '90s. For decades, the design world’s collective mission was to paint, replace, or completely hide any trace of it.
But today, oak is having a major, well-deserved renaissance, much can be attributed to the way we slice the oak tree today; into quartersawn or rift cut. It’s no longer the dated relic, it’s the darling of modern, organic, and high-end kitchen design. Loving oak today just requires a bit of strategy.

Tasting Notes of the Grain
Expecting raw oak to automatically look like that perfect, ignores that oak can end up muddy brown, often accented by those tricky olive-green undertones.
To get a truly natural, high-end look, you actually have to manipulate the color. I learned that you need to lightly stain the wood white to neutralize the "ugly" brown base. Furthermore, adding subtle blue undertones to the finish, acts as a genius color-corrector, canceling out any rogue orange or green hues and leaving you with a crisp, clean neutral. (Note: Some manufacturers add a heavy brown stain to purposefully obscure the natural variations of the wood, but for a true "ode to oak," neutralization is the goal).
Rift vs. Quartersawn
Traditional flat-sawn oak creates massive, sweeping, chaotic flame patterns that can overwhelm a modern kitchen. To avoid grain overload, you have to understand how your wood is milled. Look past standard cuts and focus on the two masters of modern oak milling Quartersawn Oak & Rift-Cut Oak
By choosing straight grain lines, taming the undertones with the right finish, and balancing it with contemporary materials, oak becomes the ultimate anchor for a soulful, elevated kitchen.
Like a perfect blend of Scotch, it just takes the right maturation, the right cut, and a little bit of patience. It’s time to forgive the '90s and embrace the grain.
Cheers to beautiful kitchens!

Making Your Countertops Kosher for Passover – A Word to the Wise

I’m not a Rabbi, so please consult yours to determine whether and how to prepare your countertop for Passover. I’m a kitchen professional, and I wanted to pass along a bit of knowledge before you begin the process.

If you have quartz or other man-made countertops, check with your Rabbi first. There are varying opinions on whether these surfaces can be kashered for Passover.

Natural stone countertops can generally be made kosher for Passover. However, not all natural countertop materials are created equal, and not every method used to kasher them is appropriate if you want to maintain the long-term life of the stone.

Granite countertops, for example, are typically not very porous and do not readily absorb water. Pouring hot water on them generally won’t harm the stone. Steam is much hotter and, while it usually won’t damage the granite itself, it may degrade the protective sealer. For that reason, I recommend resealing the countertop afterward.

My biggest concern is with quartzite and other more exotic natural stones. These materials can absorb water and should ideally be resealed annually to prevent moisture pe*******on. If moisture remains trapped in the stone, it can eventually lead to mold.

Steam koshering can present an additional risk. Very hot, pressurized steam may be forced deep into the pores of the stone, with no easy way for the moisture to escape and fully dry out afterward.

A little caution can help protect your countertop while preparing for the holiday.

Wishing you a Sweat & Kosher Passover!

Consumers Get a Break

If you’re even considering upgrading or remodeling your kitchen, today would be a momentous day to move forward! A January 1st 2026 announced 25% tariff hike on kitchen cabinets has been delayed by the administration but not canceled. This on top of a 25% tariff several months ago that is still in effect. Last year’s $10K kitchen would potentially cost $15K. Many of my suppliers swallowed much of that 1st tariff levy and only passed on 5-10%. They couldn’t do that for the additional 25% and had planned to pass most if not all the tariff, raising prices 20-25%. How long will that delay last? Reportedly till Jan 1st of next year.

The second break for consumers is quality and diversity of choice. The quality of kitchen cabinets from my suppliers has substantially increased since COVID. Better craftsmanship, assembly and especially paint makes today’s cabinet improved.

Rift Cut Oak has taken the cabinet industry by storm with its natural beauty and texture. It ushered in a wave of soft natural wood stains with elegant simple styling. The advent of the skinny shaker style with its larger flat center panel, has given the traditional Euro “flat panel”, a run for its money. These manufacturers have responded, with a flurry of natural “wood look” laminates! Not to be undone, new shaker cabinets with bold paint colors, like Navy, Ivy & Sage have surged in sales.

The addition of new styles, colors and especially hardwoods, provides the designer, decorator and consumer a greater palette, from which to design the kitchen of your dreams. 2026 should be a great year for the kitchen industry, call me to discuss how I can turn your dream into a reality.

Do tariffs matter?
just got this email from 1 supplier:
"During this period of global cost volatility, we have worked hard to minimize the impact to our customers. However, the U.S. Department of Commerce enacted Section 232 tariffs at 25% in mid-October on all imported cabinets, which will increase to 50% on January 1, 2026. In addition, we continue to absorb substantial pressure from logistics, labor, and supply chain inflation.".
In simple English: January's $10k kitchen will now cost $15K
