Sorry folks — spring planting and storm calls have kept us heads-down lately. We appreciate every one of you and love getting to know your trees.
This month I wanted to share a tree I’m hoping to know better myself — the Pagoda Dogwood (Cornus alternifolia). It’s a Michigan native with a branching structure unlike anything else out there: perfectly horizontal tiers, stacked one above the next like the floors of a pagoda. Creamy white blooms in May, blue-black berries in fall, and a form that looks intentional in every season.
Good specimens aren’t always easy to find. If you’ve seen one out in the landscape, drop it in the comments — I’d love to know where they’re showing up.
