Gambrel roofs have been part of the coastal vernacular for centuries. Creating interesting nooks and crannies as well as design challenges. This gambrel roof renovation and addition project in Bernard, on Mount Desert Island, turned out wonderful. Among other things, it gives the owner a new gathering space and in-law suite with beautiful views across the bay to Swans Island.

Our renovation of an existing 1790's home on the coast of Maine is nearing completion. Recently our custom designed, glass cabinet was installed as the finishing touch to the new kitchen. It really opens up the space and allows you to see beyond and through. The door trim in the background was milled to match historical trim in the home and the slightly visible wood floor was saved and refinished. Now this gem is ready for the next 230 years.

Occasionally when we renovate old timber framed structures in Maine we run into unforeseen circumstances. This coastal building, built by the British, dates back to the late 1700's and has brick infill between the timber members. It isn't as rare as you might think, we've experienced this on a couple other projects as well. (The new timbers are part of our stabilization efforts.) We will be removing the brick and installing insulation to increase the energy efficiency of the building for the next several decades.
