Our crew wrapped up a new asphalt install in Springfield, KY, and this one had to be done mostly by hand.

Since the drive was tough to access, we used a mini skid steer to haul in hot asphalt and handled the install the right way from start to finish.

Asphalt turns gray for the same reason a black shirt fades in the sun.

Over time, sunlight, air, rain, and daily traffic slowly dry out the oils in the asphalt surface. This process is called oxidation, but the simple version is this:

The darker, richer surface starts to fade as the asphalt gets older and more exposed. When asphalt turns gray, it does not always mean it needs to be replaced. Sometimes it just means the surface is drying out and losing protection.

That matters because dry asphalt can become more brittle over time. Once it gets brittle, cracks are more likely to show up, especially with Kentucky heat, rain, and freeze-thaw cycles.

How long does an asphalt driveway actually last?

The honest answer is: it depends.

A well-installed asphalt driveway can often last 15 to 25 years, but that lifespan depends on a few big things:

✔️ How strong the base is underneath
✔️ How well water drains away
✔️ How often cracks are sealed
✔️ Whether it gets regular sealcoating
✔️ How much traffic and weight it handles

The biggest thing most people don’t see is the base. If the foundation under the asphalt is weak, soft, or holding water, the surface is going to break down a lot faster.

Kentucky weather plays a role too. Hot summers, heavy rain, and freeze-thaw cycles can all wear on asphalt over time.
