This is a great example as to why you should give us a call to have your well water sampled so we can have Water Quality Investigations, test it and create a treatment plan to save you thousands of dollars and all the headaches that come with this.
Well, well, well... Microbial Influenced Corrosion struck again!
This well pump was ~3 years old when it was removed due to two holes caused by corrosion. When pumps fail like this, it is easy to assume it is a result of "aggressive water," but to truly address corrosion problems like this, the underlying cause needs to be understood. Our testing revealed that, not only did the water contain nutrients that would support the formation of biofilm on well equipment, but it also was not properly maintained to minimize the growth of this biofilm. As biofilm established, microorganisms sought out nutrients and metals necessary for their metabolic processes (similar to how your body needs fruits and vegetables to stay healthy). In their search for missing nutrients, the microorganisms release byproducts that cause corrosion of metals and minerology in a process known as Microbial Influenced Corrosion. In severe cases, this causes failure of well equipment, as seen in this image.
Here at WQI, we often help clients determine what maintenance their well needs, how often they need maintenance, and what areas of the well need to be targeted during maintenance activities. Regular maintenance to target and mitigate biofilm has helped many wells avoid water quality problems, including but not limited to:
🔧 Costly pump replacements
🦠Repeat Total Coliform & E. coli positives
🪣 Costly water treatment to remove metals, Radium, and other regulated contaminants
