Got another row of sweet potatoes planted just before the rain started. Huge win! And the corn is starting to pop up. Apparently the squirrels didn’t get all of the seeds! Yay!We’ll wrap this corn square space in chicken wire and attempt to cover the top. That will give these guys a chance against the squirrel family that stalks us. Hoping they stay in their nest until the rain stops and we can get out there and fence it off. And our awesome kid finished putting up the cattle panels for the indeterminate tomato plants. We’ll pull the w**ds after the rain stops and it dries a bit. Then as the plants grow, attach them to the cattle panels for support.

What else did we see?

- A rogue squash growing in the potatoes. It’s small enough we can probably transplant this to the squash row and see what grows.

- Purslane. It’s a superfood! Did you know? We’ve never tried this before but it’s calling us so I think we have to. 😬🤞

- Rogue Nasturtium - always helpful in the garden to trap pests away from our other plants. This one will stay right here.

- I pulled out this common vining w**d and wow look at the roots! (That was so satisfying!). I didn’t know the roots on these were so deep! “Hasta la bye bye w**d”

- Strawberries! We just planted these little guys and are so happy they are producing well.

- The Sweet Potato slips are growing!

- we planted micro greens in pots and put them on the posts. Microgreens are super healthy and easy to grow! (Stop in - we sell the seeds!)

- Finally these Jaclyn Raspberries are producing. We tied them up to the fence. Hoping the critters don’t notice because it looks like it will be a pretty good crop. Jaclyn are everbearing so they will produce in July and again in September.

Our onions bolted! But it’s ok. They look like they’re ready to dig up. We cut the flower stalks, which are entirely edible and have a mild, sweet onion flavor. They smell amazing! I am really pleased with what is peeking through the soil. One day this week - after the soil dries a bit - we will harvest the onions.

Spent some time in the garden this evening. It was time to cut the garlic scapes. We got a few done and will finish the rest tomorrow. It’s important to cut these scapes so the energy of the plant can concentrate on growing a larger bulb. Plus they have a mild garlic flavor and are delicious in soups, ramen, omelets, pesto and so much more! Trim off the flower bud and the bottom inch or so of the scape as this can be woody.

Now we wait. No more fertilizing. We will give the plants about 1-2” of water per week (thank you rain!). In about another month or so - about a week before harvesting - we will stop watering and let the soil dry out. We can test a bulb by carefully digging down to see if it is plump and well-defined. If so, we harvest. We hang or lay them flat in a well-ventilated, shaded area to cure for 2-4 weeks. That last super important step will give your garlic a longer shelf life.

I looked up today and noticed we have some really pretty shade and ornamental trees in the yard. And at good prices too! We don’t offer planting services but we do deliver.

You can DIY plant a tree
1) Call J.U.L.I.E. to mark the utility lines
2) Pick out a tree
3) Dig a hole about 1 1/2 times the size of the root ball
4) Back fill with a mix of composted soil and native soil (what you’ve dug up minus any clay)
5) Roll or place it in and finish filling in with soil mix and water it in

It’s usually a good idea to mulch around new plantings. This helps keep the soil moist while the new roots get settled in their new home. Just don’t do the volcano method! Keep a little trench around the trunk so it can breathe.

Spring hours are:
Monday through Saturday 9-5pm

This little sparrow has been hanging around since spring, bouncing on the back of the tractor and singing. He is there all day long. Flies off when we’re loading and comes back when we’re done and gives us the “what for”. There seems to be an over abundance of birds this year. Lots of cardinals and hummingbirds too.
