I call my self a handyman.....even though I know the stigma that goes with it. Others consider me a Master Carpenter, Craftsman, etc. I wear the lesser (looked down upon) badge with pride.
You see....I am a Master Carpenter....but I can also design, pour a foundation, wire, plumb, roof, side, paint even interior design a house. Have been in this trade for 43 years, started at 14, lead my first job at 18. Started on my own at 27. Every builder I have ever worked for or sub for would jump at a chance to get me back. Architects respect me and don't have attitudes when I say it can't be done in 3 dimensions just because you drew it in 2. (Before Autocad etc. made everyone smart.) The point is.... I have to stand up for the "Handyman, (and woman). After seeing the post and comments on here, the judgemental B.S. I am glad I don't call myself a carpenter. Most of you will be flipping burgers or driving UBER when the housing market crashes. People like me will be able to set our wages and pick our jobs when everyone else is cutting each other's throat to build a hen house. When I started I was lucky enough to be taught by MASTERS that thought of themselves as average, always knew there was more to learn. I go to work everyday looking for knowledge, hoping to learn more.
