Compaction is a critical step in road building. It supports the structural integrity, strengthens the load-bearing surface, and acts as a barrier for water. Well-done compaction can double the lifespan of a road.

Now that goes down smooth.

We prioritize sourcing materials that exceed the standard, mining durable stone, crushing straight to spec, and testing in-house every time. Because quality aggregates result in roads that are stronger from the start, and rock-solid for the long haul.

High quality materials. Higher quality roads.

And, lucky us — we have the best resources for the job right in our backyard.

The finished road is only the last step.

Before that, there’s paving, material delivery, plant production, stockpile management, crushing, screening, and rock coming out of the quarry.

A road starts with the material, and every step after that depends on getting it right.

Asphalt has a way of stretching the clock.

Some days start in the dark. Some nights end with somebody still tucked into a machine, chasing down a problem.

The work takes patience. It takes pride. And it usually gets done by the kind of people who would rather fix the issue than talk about how long the day has been.

We appreciate the guys who put in those hours.

With White River Materials tied into the company, the aggregate side of the work is not some disconnected piece of the process. The same operation supplying the rock understands where that material is headed, how it will be used, and why consistency matters once it reaches the plant or the jobsite.

That kind of connection matters in road building. A smoother finished road starts with better control over the material long before the mix ever hits the paver.

The day starts early around here, and mornings like this make you grateful for the work, the place, and the freedom to build in the communities we call home.

The roads we build carry people through everyday life: to work, home, school, church, ballgames, and family gatherings.

Today, we remember the men and women who gave their lives to protect that freedom.

From all of us at Atlas, we honor them this Memorial Day.

The paving process is really a chain reaction of different crews and equipment all working together at the right time.

One crew mills off the worn surface while another follows behind laying fresh asphalt. Jobs like this happen in stages, because good paving starts long before the new mat hits the road.

The milling machine removes damaged asphalt so crews can fix surface issues before paving begins. That old material, called RAP (reclaimed asphalt pavement), can often be reused in future mixes instead of going to waste.

After that, everything has to stay moving together. Truck timing, material flow, paving speed, compaction, and traffic control all play a role in how smooth and consistent the finished road turns out.

A smoother ride later usually comes from a lot of small decisions being made right during the work.

Every stockpile at an asphalt plant is separated by size and material type because asphalt is an engineered mix. Different roads, traffic loads, and project specs all require different aggregate blends.

From there, conveyors keep material moving through the plant so it can be heated, mixed with liquid asphalt binder, and loaded out consistently for paving crews.

That consistency matters. Better material control helps crews produce smoother roads, longer pavement life, and fewer problems down the line.

What looks like dirt work is actually one of the most precise phases of roadbuilding. The motor grader you see here is using GPS and machine control to hit exact elevations and slopes. Those masts are tied to a 3D model of the finished road.

Fine grading is also what establishes drainage. Even a subtle change in elevation affects how water moves off the roadway for the life of that pavement. Get it wrong here, and you're chasing problems for years.

Roadbuilding is a coordinated sequence of operations, and the grader is responsible for the final shaping before the next phase can begin.
