If you have already planted basil and or pepper plants, you will need to protect them Thursday and Friday nights. We will be below 45 degrees and that is where they start getting unhappy.

It is that time of year!

I was just walking through the garden and was inspecting the liriope. If you dig down into the plant, you will see the beginnings of their spring growth starting to push out. This is the time to take your mower and set it at the highest level and mow all of the old leaves down. If you do this, you will have beautiful liriope in a few weeks with no winter damage.

DO NOT CUT MONKEY GRASS!!! You will have brown tips forever.

The cold is coming! We have this evening and tomorrow to prepare! Pets, Plants, People, and Pipes!!! If we get an ice storm don't worry about your landscape plants. The ice will actually protect them. We are not supposed to get as cold as we did last year. See ya, on the other side! Happy gardening!

Remember to plant your paper white bulbs this week, to bloom for Christmas and New Year's Eve.
Keep your poinsettias evenly moist to keep them looking good. Either use a couple ice cubes everyday or water well once a week. If poinsettias dry out all of the green leaves start falling off.
Happy Thanksgiving, Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, and Happy Gardening!!!

Ida has us all very busy, but don't forget to put your Christmas Cacti back to their regular place, water, and fertilize them regularly! Happy Gardening and Ida recovery!

I hope everyone made it through Ida ok? Remember, the hummingbirds will be very hungry and a lot of their diet (insects) were blown out of here and many flowers were damaged. Please, put out fresh nectar as soon as it is safe to do so.

Today is August 1st! There are a few things to do in the garden to create more flowers! It is time to move your Christmas cacti to a place with less light and do not water it for the entire month. A covered porch or inside if you can't keep it dry. In September, return them to their regular spot, water, and fertilize regularly. This month of stress will make them set their buds to bloom for the holidays. August is also the time to cut back your shrub roses hard.(30% to 50%) This will keep them healthy and create more flowers for the fall. Once you see new growth appear, it is time to start feeding them.

Last but not least, the hummingbirds will be returning and you will want fresh nectar in your feeders! Happy Gardening!

Just a friendly reminder! You probably haven't been watering a lot, but with two dry days in a row........check your plants and especially your pots.
