🕊🤍 Every company has a generation of men who quietly build its reputation. For Hackett Construction, Gary was one of those men.

Gary was a journeyman carpenter who worked for my grandfather, Fred Thenen Sr, long before my time at Hackett. Back in those days, the work was tough, expectations were high, and the men in the field carried the reputation of the company on their shoulders.

Gary spent many years working at Clark Equipment for Hackett—so many that he had more time working there than many of the plant’s own employees. Over the years he also worked on projects at Denso, installing press pits, trenches, and concrete flooring, as well as at Eaton in Marshall, putting in trench conveyor pits. He also did work at Cello-Foil—the kind of heavy industrial work that required skill, grit, and pride in doing things right.

Jeff Alwood shared these memories of Gary with me. After Gary retired, Jeff’s dad, Doc, would often pick him up and the two of them would go out to breakfast together. Gary was also one of the “good old boys” who would still stop by the Hackett office during retirement just to check in and visit. Gary's retirement visits is how I came to know him.

Those moments say a lot about a man. When people keep showing up long after the work is done, it means the place—and the people—meant something to them.

Though I didn’t know the 'workforce Gary,' it’s clear he was respected, well liked, and part of the generation of craftsmen who helped build both our company and our community.

Men like Gary helped shape the legacy my grandfather started.

Rest easy, Gary. Your work and the friendships you built along the way won’t be forgotten.

🏆 Celebrating Hackett's Youth 🏆

Wishing the Union City Wrestling team the very best at Team State today — especially Senior Johnny Olmsted.

Johnny got his start with us at Hackett as a youth worker and is the son of our Millwright foreman, Tater Nate Olmsted.

Fun Fact: Nate "Tater," our late CEO Jerry Thenen "Beast," and our project manager, Nick Thenen "Little Beast" wrestled side by side — they were fierce and all made regular appearances at State, with Nate earning an individual state championship.

Now it’s Johnny’s turn to step on that mat and make his own mark.

We’re proud of you, Johnny. Go represent and enjoy the moment. We're all rooting for you! 💪🤼‍♂️

After opening the year as All-City Champions, Hackett Youth Worker, Ashton Hall added another highlight to his dominant senior season by taking 1st place in singles at this weekend's Sturgis Invitational at Bronson Strike Zone.

A standout on the lanes, Ashton continues to represent Pennfield with excellence. So proud of you, Ashton - Congratulations! 💪🎳🔥

Carlene was more than just our office manager of many years; she was a constant source of organization, warmth, and humor. Starting in 1969, she became the heart of Hackett, where her dedication, positive attitude, unshakeable work ethic, and incredible multitasking skills helped shape not just the office but the people around her.

As kids, my brother Jerry and I would enjoy sitting at her desk, it was so much fun—playing with typewriters, crafting paperclip chains. She never scolded us for “disrupting” her work; instead, she welcomed our curiosity with patience and a smile.

Her transition from manual payroll to computers in the office showed her remarkable ability to adapt, and she did it with grace. But beyond her impressive professional skills, it was her ability to connect with people—whether it was her coworkers, her family, or anyone she met—that left an impact.

Even after her retirement from Hackett, Carlene stayed in touch with friends and colleagues, sharing lunch and memories for decades. Her dedication to Hackett, and the bonds she built there, remained an important part of her life. A few years ago, I was saddened to hear that she battled Alzheimer’s, but it was great to learn that the memories she held onto at that time, were of her time at Hackett—her work, her coworkers, and the family she made along the way. Her daughter told me she would tell her, "It's time to go out for lunch with the Hackett crew again." Unfortunately, Carlene outlived them all—however, I'm sure she's finally had that lunch. 💖

Shoutout to Ashton Hall, a dominant senior and former 𝗛𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗲𝘁𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗲𝗿—proudly repping as the son of our project manager, Mark Hall. Can’t wait to see where this season rolls next! 💪🎳

We’re proud of Brooks’ hard work, dedication, and outstanding performance. Congratulations to Brooks, Marc, and the entire Bruins team on an incredible achievement!
