Today I got an important reminder about why sorting materials matters.

I was at the transfer station waiting for a spot to unload when I heard one of the flaggers yell, "Hey, something's smoking over there!"

Sure enough, there was smoke rolling out of a small object on the floor right where a wheel loader had just moved some material.

The flagger quickly grabbed a shovel, ran over, scooped up the smoking object, and tossed it into a metal container.

I asked him what it was.

"Some sort of little battery!"

Luckily it wasn't buried deep under a mountain of garbage. If it had been, we might all be smelling burnt trash.

It's a good reminder that batteries don't belong in the garbage. They can get crushed, punctured, and damaged during handling, and when that happens things can get real in a hurry.

That is why I keep a battery container in my truck and separate them out during cleanouts whenever I find them.

Most people aren't trying to throw away batteries improperly. They just get mixed in with boxes, drawers, old tools, electronics, and forgotten junk over the years.

Always check old battery powered electronics to make sure the batteries have been removed before tossing it in the trash!

A little extra sorting takes a little more time, but sometimes it can prevent a much bigger problem.

It’s been a busy couple of weeks here at Curry Contracting 360 LLC.

One of the projects completed last week was maintaining this multi-acre commercial septic field that we mow a few times a year.

This kind of mowing takes a little more attention than most people realize.

Before every mow, we walk the field and clear around all the risers and cleanouts to make sure everything stays visible and protected while mowing.

Last thing anyone wants is damaged septic components because somebody rushed through the job.

A lot of this work just comes down to slowing down and paying attention.
