Vermiculite Insulation:
If your attic contains vermiculite, assume it is contaminated with asbestos and avoid disturbing it. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends leaving it completely alone to prevent microscopic fibers from becoming airborne, which poses severe health risks if inhaled.
If you decide to remove the vermiculite or if you need to access the attic heavily for renovations, always hire a licensed and accredited asbestos abatement contractor. Never attempt to test, move, or remove the insulation yourself. Standard dust masks do not protect against asbestos fibers.
Vermiculite is a natural mineral that expands when heated into lightweight, fire-resistant, and odorless pebbles. Used widely from the 1940s to the 1990s as loose-fill insulation, it is highly concerning today because most of it came from a contaminated mine and may contain toxic asbestos.
