As the design phase of our Pine Plains weekend home comes to a close, we have these great renderings of the back garden at twilight and a bird’s eye view. Let us know what you think!

As we dive deeper into our “weekend home” project in Garrison, NY, we’ve been researching the micro-climate and its impact on the building’s location. We also have to take into consideration the size and shape of the building in relation to the natural views and site characteristics. These images show some of our research into wind speed and direction, sun impact, and zoning.

Part of our work on Thompson Library at is to update the library to function for the modern needs of students while preserving the incredible history that Vassar is so well known for.

Front and center is this beautiful stained glass depiction of the first woman to have ever graduated from a university: Elena Lucrezia Cornaro Piscopia. This piece shows Elena defending her thesis on Aristotle and earning women’s first Ph.D. in philosophy in 1678. You can read more about Elena and this fine glasswork at vassar.edu

We're working on a unique sloped-roof enclosure for an existing lakeside stone fireplace in Putnam Valley. NY. With the slab and fireplace already in place, we're designing a glass and timber enclosure for the owner to reflect and engage with the natural environment. The delicate structure closely resembles a Japanese tea house that will remain off the grid and utilize the natural resources around it, such as rainwater harvesting and a PV array to power an occasional light fixture in the evening hours.

DBA TO LEAD PLANNING STUDY FOR
THE THOMPSON LIBRARY AT VASSAR COLLEGE

BEACON, NY---DBA is pleased to formally announce that it has been retained to provide architectural assessment, programming, and planning services for Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, NY. The work will include assessing, programming, and planning for upgrades to the historic 1903 Thompson Library and adjacent library buildings.

The Thompson Library is one of the most recognizable buildings on campus and a critical asset to the fundamental principles of Vassar College. As Vassar continues to develop as a preeminent liberal arts college, the building, that has been underutilized in recent history, has a unique opportunity to refocus its purpose and engage academics and student life well into the future. An improved library experience can fundamentally transform key areas of the building by elevating the user experience through improved access, visibility, and use and will create a functional, coherent, and transformative community space that serves Vassar students well into the 21st century.

The planning study aims to provide the college with a thoughtful analysis of existing spaces, a reinterpretation of the existing program, and a practical and creative re-planning of the library’s interior and exterior spaces. The effort will include student engagement, stakeholder, and senior administration workshops to garner support and build consensus for the project. The outcome of the study will result in an informed recommendation for architectural solutions to each location, estimated budget requirements for future construction, and improved opportunities for fundraising and financial support.

“We couldn’t be more thrilled to be working with the team at Vassar College on this project and to have the opportunity to reinterpret the way Vassar will use this important asset. We are thankful to Vassar for trusting us with this important responsibility,” says David Burke, Principal, and Founder of DBA. “Higher Education is a sector in which we feel extremely comfortable. Our team at DBA has spent much of our professional career designing and building structures that serve the needs of students and faculty and that enable enhanced student experiences for growth and flexibility on campuses nationwide. This opportunity at Vassar allows us to continue that important work.”

The DBA office began as a home office to reduce commuting time, but also helped connect with the outside world, all while getting work done. But as the pandemic took hold, it became an essential part of doing business.

Over the last 18 months, the building has become a multi-purpose creative space where we work hard, meet with clients, and collaborate. The building is filled with natural light and ventilation, conferencing facilities, and room for 5. As we grow and look for a larger space, we are thankful for our ability to take advantage of the little things that got us through a difficult but prosperous year and a half.

Versatility is a goal to make a building adaptable to multiple uses, bring greater value, and become more useful in the long term. An important design element in The Ritz Theater was to provide spaces, treatments, and equipment that could be used for multiple purposes. The seating configuration could be arranged in over 30 different configurations that would seat from 50 to over 600 visitors. Each configuration would be acoustically tuned by custom mobile acoustic towers that would absorb or reflect sound dependent on the performance type.

As our Technical Director, she’ll be able to put her years of experience in residential, commercial and institutional projects to great use. In addition to architecture, Heather is an accomplished carpenter and even built her own house!

When she’s not working, Heather likes to spend her time outdoors, mountain biking and rock climbing. We’re excited to have Heather on the team.

We’re excited to announce the start of work on a cultural master plan with Environmental and ecological planner . The 60 acre site, located in shadow of the Shawangunk mountain range in upstate New York, will bring a new home to this national cultural institution with a focus on environmental stewardship, ecological restoration and the use of renewable resources as a driver for site organization and building design. We are honored to be a part of this project as it will continue to focus our continued efforts on environmental restoration and community building.

S K E T C H E S - a series!

Looking back our old sketch books, we came across these two drawings of an NYC apartment furniture system. Our friend and client wanted to make the most of their child’s small room, so we came up with this simple-yet-sophisticated solution. The design includes closet space, storage, a desk, and a lofted bed, all of which create a clubhouse feel that any kid would enjoy!
