POLLINATORS
By: Theodore โ€“ Youth Master Gardener

Pollinators including bees, butterflies, moths, birds and some beetles are essential for life on Earth. They are responsible for one out of every 3 bites of food consumed, and the reproduction of over 75% of flowering plants. Pollinators play a vital role in the world's economy. They contribute to $217 billion of the global economy. They are able to do this with all their unique traits and mouth parts that have developed over billions of years. Most plants in the world rely on a specific type of pollinator to pollinate them. Pollinators can range from tiny bees to lemurs that weigh up to 10 pounds. There are pollinators of all unique shapes and sizes in the world but they all do their part in the greater good.

How to Take Care of Hummingbirds
By: Eliza โ€“ Youth Master Gardener

Hummingbirds stick their tongues out in a flower so that they can eat all the nectar. They have two tubes on their tongue to catch the nectar. Hummingbirds donโ€™t flap their wings up and down; they flap them sideways. When they go to feeders, they only let their families come. They donโ€™t let other hummingbirds drink at the same time. The big hummingbirds scare away smaller hummingbirds that are not their family. Hummingbirds like the colors red, pink, purple, and orange, so they look for flowers in these colors. They also like tubular flowers. When youโ€™re feeding hummingbirds from a feeder, only use white sugar and not brown sugar. Choose a feeder that is red to attract hummingbirds. You can also put water in a bird bath. Hummingbirds like birdbaths. They will be coming back in April!

Nuts
By: Chloe โ€“ Youth Master Gardener

Nuts are not seeds. There is all kind of nuts around the world. Peanuts are not really nuts. The pine nuts have a roasty taste. Walnuts taste like a little bit like chocolate. Almonds are my favorite nuts. All nuts need to grow from a seed, from a plant, to a tree. The pine nuts are in the pine cones. After the tree is ready, then people come and harvest the nuts. They go and put them into the market after they are all washed and ready and packed. First, there is a seed. Then it is a little seedling. And then it is a tree with blossoms. Then it is a full grown tree. Then the people go and gather the nuts. The semi truck takes it to the nut factory. After they get all washed, they go to the market. All nuts have different sizes. Some have different colors.

SALAMANDERS
By: Mary โ€“ Youth Master Gardener

On February 3rd we were learning about amphibians. Miss Carol brought in a Tiger Salamander! We learned the difference between salamanders and newts. We also learned that salamanders and newts are not lizards, but they are amphibians. We learned the life cycle of a salamander. They go from eggs to tadpoles to juvenile salamanders, then to adults. We learned that salamanders are poisonous when they are grown up.

FUNGI
By Leon โ€“ Youth Master Gardener

Fungi- the good, the bad, and the gully. It is commonly found on decaying logs or food that was left out. Fungi develops the best in warm areas. It can be bad and harmful. There are 200 bad species of fungi, but there are good fungi that help us live and they recycle left-over matter. Fungi are actually more like an animal than a plant. Fungi is amazing and helps our planet survive.
