In winter honey bees do not heat the hive - they heat each other. The bees bunch together in a tight ball called a cluster and form a "mantle" around the outside edge of the cluster to act as a shield between the cold exterior and the warmer interior. The inner bees vibrate their flight muscles to generate heat, and workers take turns rotating inward to warm up before moving back outward to create the outer shield. This keeps the core of the cluster (where the queen is) at 70-80°F. The cluster will stay in one area of the hive until they have depleted those honey reserves before shifting.

Did you know the male bees get forcefully kicked out of the beehive? And that the queen bee stops laying eggs?
