Back in the day plumbers didn't take care. Some still don't but I hope they never do this. Plumbers cut out sections of the joists on the 2nd and 3rd floor for the bathrooms. they were fairly right on top of each other. So this plumber caused about 3 to 4 thousand dollars in repairs. Read the picture descriptions for more detail.

Its hard to see in the first photo the nearly 1 inch gap seen at the center of the level. In the second photo (much better photo) you see the gap is down to 1/8 inches. The house was "groaning" by this point and we do not want to damage the slate roof.

Home was altered where a wall was removed and they added the I beam (slightly off). We needed add new 7x7 support column for the I beam and correct the floor above since it sagged. Additionally we are removing the remaining wall and adding another support column and LVL header. What you see is temporary supports to hold up the floor while we add the column and adjust the I beam.

Pictures of the first floor demo completed. The demo took longer than expected. That's what happens when you remove occasional 3 layers of flooring or 2 layers of wall or ceiling material. Just before we break for the holidays.

It is fun to see the changes where walls have been removed or doorways removed and added (see first and second picture).

When we return we start adding new framing!

History of our current project:
1774-Aquilla Scott sold to son-in-law Judge William Smithson the 103 acre property which the house currently sits. A wooden house, at some point called the "Homestead", was built. It was sold in 1902 to Canner George W. and Lavina Bradford. In 1904 the Homestead burned to the ground. The Bradfords built the present colonial revival home on the original foundation. The home was constructed of Port Deposit, Maryland granite.
The Homestead eventually saw the owners of Aegis publisher John D. Worthington, II in 1935. The farm portion became the neighborhood of Homestead Village. In 1971 it was sold to Mr. & Mrs. Edward and Barbara Pitts.
In 1993, Barbara sold it to the Bel Air Methodist Church. The church provided the Homestead as a meeting place for seminars, reception hall, wedding venue and the like.

Completed the demo of the 2nd floor. Now to see the damage done by the plumber and what changes have been made since the house was first built. Then to decide on what changes to make to the original plan.
