Our Story

Penn State Extension Master Gardeners are volunteers who support Penn State Cooperative Extension's educational programs in consumer horticulture. They develop their horticultural expertise through participation in educational programs conducted by Penn State University faculty and Cooperative Extension staff. Faculty, Extension specialists, and Extension educators also provide diagnostic support for horticultural issues and questions to Master Gardener volunteers actively participating in the program. The Penn State University Master Gardener program was established to assist Cooperative Extension in reaching the consumer horticulture audience.

The mission of the Penn State Extension Centre County Master Gardener volunteer program is to support Penn State Cooperative Extension by utilizing research-based information to educate the public on best practices in consumer horticulture and environmental stewardship. The Centre County Master Gardeners Program has a variety of projects underway for the community: a poison prevention program for first graders, a variety of gardens including those which feature native plants, attract pollinators and work within a wetland. The Centre County Master Gardeners also offer the Gardening Hotline, which is a free service through the Penn State extension office to help residents with gardening questions and concerns.

The program was initiated in 1972 in Seattle, Washington in response to questions posed to Extension. David Gibby, an Extension Agent in King County, is credited for designing the Master Gardener program to meet the demand for reliable home gardening information.The Master Gardener program was so successful in the state of Washington that it was adopted by many other states within a few years. Today, the program is active in 48 States, the District of Columbia, and three Canadian provinces.
