New to the WSU Whatcom County Master Gardener Hovander Plant Sale? Here’s some of the info about us and the sale!

Where do the plants come from?

The plants are largely donations by our own Master Gardeners, our family, friends, and other community members. We also receive donations from our local nurseries. Check out the photos so see some of the gardens the plants are coming from!

Who are we?

Master Gardeners are members of our community who undergo an extensive training program and internship supervised by WSU. Once certified, Master Gardeners provide education and mentoring to home gardeners about sound and sustainable gardening practices.

What are you supporting when you buy our plants?

Your community! The plant sale is a fundraiser put on by the Whatcom County Master Gardener Foundation who partners with the WSU Whatcom Master Gardener Program to serve the public in many ways including:
* Funding Master Gardener Program outreach activities, including Ask-A-Master Gardener events, educational gardening-related lectures and workshops, demonstration gardens, and the Extension office Plant Diagnostic Clinic;
* Funding for Master Gardener trainee scholarships and Master Gardener project proposals for educational outreach;
* Funding and managing public demonstration gardens at Hovander Homestead Park and the Roeder Home, in partnership with Whatcom County Parks and Recreation;
* Collaborating with WSU Master Gardener Program management to advance shared goals that provide delivery of science-based best-gardening practices throughout our community;
* Raising and donating more than a ton of food to the Ferndale Food Bank every year.

We hope to see you Saturday the 9th at 9!

Plant Sale Highlight- Bargain Beauties

Is there anything more exciting than a bargain plant? These plants are just as awesome as our other plants, but some lack a known flower color, some we have a lot of, and some we just want to offer at a discount. At $3, the price is hard to beat!

New Plant Sale Map!!!

As avid devotees of the right plant, right place motto, we are transplanting our plant (sale) to a more suitable location to allow the field by the pavilion to recover from winter damage. Have no fear, we are still at Hovander Homestead Park, we are just moving across the sidewalk to the orchard! Take a look at the new map and make your plant plans! Driving in and parking is similar to previous years and signs (and volunteers) will be there to guide you!

Plant Sale Highlight- Sun Perennials

I would sooner try to count the tulips at the Skagit festival than try to enumerate the sun-loving perennials we will have at this sale. You might say our sun tables are a shining example of gardening done right. And our Iris table? It’s sure to put a twinkle in your eye! Puns aside… with so many beautiful plants, you’re sure to find something to lighten up your garden whether that’s a Sedum, Hydrangea, Iris, Nepeta, or Echinacea.

It has been a dark and stormy few weeks in Whatcom County (both literally and metaphorically), but we are happy to announce a bit of spring brightness - the 2026 Whatcom CD Native Plant Sale is now open for pre-orders! Order your plants now to pick up on March 20th or 21st! www.whatcomcd.org/native-plant-sale

Plants are sold for pre-orders on a first-come, first-served basis through March 6th. The pre-order minimum is $100. Plants available for pre-order are sold in bundles of 5 or 10. If a species is sold out, you will be able to find it at our Plant Sale & Celebration on March 21st! 🌲
