You might expect that with less than 2 inches of rain in the past three months, the prairie would be entirely brown and uninteresting. Yet, even amidst the browns, there are dots of bright yellow from the heath aster and camphorweed, and all shades of gold.

SUNDAY SCHOOL ON THE PRAIRIE

*Story* While maintaining the edges of the prairie, Trey came across a baby Mockingbird nestled in the tall grass. The tall grass offers a safe haven for many birds to build their nests and find food.
*Lesson* Even in our busy lives, it's important to take a moment to look out for those who are still learning their way around the big world, especially when their mother has briefly stepped away.

*Story* Last winter, we rescued Eastern Gamagrass from a site along the I-10 freeway that is scheduled for bulldozing. Although we were uncertain of its chances for survival, we recognized that it would likely fare much better than if it remained under construction equipment.
*Lesson* Just like people, native grasses flourish when they are in their best place, surrounded by diverse neighbors. Together, they can support one another and contribute to a thriving environment.

*Story* While on a walk through the tall grass to check on the Gamagrass, Trey and I stopped to identify a new sound. Then Trey gently directed, “Honey. Take one giant step back.”
*Lesson* When visiting someone else’s space, it’s valuable to heed the advice of those you trust, especially when they suggest it’s time to create a little distance from your host. This allows everyone to feel comfortable, and you might even get the chance to appreciate the beautiful hognose snake who was trying to say, “Hey dude. Please don’t stand on my tail.” We weren’t able to get a picture for this one.

Have a nature-filled day and Keep Texas Prairie!
