Okra and Asparagus are a couple of great summertime crops to grow in Texas.
I moved from our 60 acres and downsized to 10 acres and had to rebuild all the beds and hoophouse for the new property. The first bed I started was with Mary Washington Asparagus. Pundits say it takes 2-3 years to grow Asparagus. WELL take a look. This is our first year in the bed and we have been picking daily for the last few weeks. A great all summer veggie.
Remember to cut them all back before the first freeze and cover with a heavy layer of mulch. I use woodchips. Good to go for the next 20+ years.

Okra is another summertime favorite. I like Clemson for its spinless quality and consistent daily pickings. Pick Okra when it is around 2-3 inches. Be careful, these suckers can grow 5-8 inches in a couple of days. Happy Gardening.

Two of my all time GREAT summer crops are corn and spinach. But Phil, it takes too long to grow corn especially in the HOT summer months in Texas, and surely it is too hot for spinach.
HOGWASH !!!!

I have been growing and harvesting corn three times a year for the past 5-years. I start with the (SU) Early Sunglow Hybrid. Most seed companies carry this hybrid variety. I like True Leaf Market.
I just wrapped up my first planting (Mar 15th) and now the 2nd crop planted last week (June 13th) The 3rd crop I will plant in early August. I get TWO full 6-8 inch ears of corn per stalk. The stalks grow to about 4-5 feet tall. The secret to 62-day corn is the short growing season. Try it, I think you will love the taste of this sweet corn. Great for fresh on the grill, boiled or stored in your freezer.

Few gardeners have thought to plant Spinach in the hot summer months. Again, just a myth. Try Malabar Spinach. This variety LOVES the heat. I cook it up just like Popeye Spinach (Bloomsdale), boil it and use in a variety of dishes.

Tomato Hornworms are one of the most common tomato plant pests. These bright green caterpillars can easily strip your tomato plants down to bare stems in a matter of days.
When it comes to garden pests, hornworms are at the top of every tomato grower’s list.

Hornworms don’t bite or sting, they can’t. That stinger is basically a hood ornament…on the trunk.
They’ll even eat the young tomatoes too. look for the caterpillars to be in plain sight at the top of the plants. During the hottest part of the day, hornworms will be lower on the plant and under the leaves to avoid the sun.

Keeping a bird feeder or suet near your garden will attract birds. And quite a few of our feathered friends enjoy eating hornworms. You might consider putting a feeder right in among your tomato plants.
When it comes to controlling hornworms, I find the best solution is also the easiest.
Just pick them off.

If you’ve caught them too late and you’re dealing with an infestation, you may wish to consider using BT or bacillus thuringiensis
