The median home price in Bend has now surged to $773k. The average household income needed to purchase a home of this price in today's market comprises only 17% of our workforce.

To afford a home in Bend, households need to earn more than $150,000. This is creating a significant challenge for our local businesses who are struggling to hire people for open positions. Many are having to look outside the local candidate pool to find qualified applicants and some have reported to us that after an offer is made, the applicant rescinds it due to an inability to find housing. Local businesses are doing what they can to increase salaries but most aren't able to keep up with the wage increase demand needed to bridge the gap. Less employees mean businesses aren't able to serve their customers - you - in the capacity you may be accustomed to. This means longer waits to get in to see a doctor, or to get a table at a restaurant or to have repairs done to your home.
