π Last spring, the Benicia Public Library hosted a series of programs funded by a grant from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act. The series included presentations and workshops sharing information on methods of reducing carbon footprints with simple changes that support mindful choices and sustainable habits. π¦
π± The grant also funded the creation of a Support Demonstration Garden. Working with the nonprofit organization Monarch Milkweed Project, a raised bed was created near the Libraryβs entrance and planted with native flowering plants that support pollinators including butterflies, bees, and birds. β²
πHelping pollinators is crucial for the environment and for our own well-being. They play an integral role in biodiversity, food production, ecosystem health, sustaining wildlife habitats, and more. π¦ , in particular, are a threatened population in Northern California due to habitat loss, pesticide use, climate change, disease, and misinformation. The demonstration garden creates an active "migration waystation" and food for Monarch butterflies and other pollinators and serves to inform the community by providing an example of and information on how to effectively create pollinator support spaces in private gardens.
We are very happy to report that the garden is now well established AND (as you can see from the photo) in use!
