Repost from How Things Work

Most people look for the biggest watermelon, but the field spot often tells a much better story.

That pale patch forms where the watermelon rested on the ground while ripening. A white spot usually means it was picked too early, while a creamy yellow spot is often a sign that it had more time to mature and develop sweetness.

The rind, sound, and overall appearance can also provide clues. When several signs point in the same direction, you have a much better chance of bringing home a sweet, juicy watermelon.

The science behind noticing positive things is rooted in how our brains process attention and emotion. When we consciously focus on positive experiences or aspects of our environment, our brain’s reward system—particularly the release of dopamine—is activated, which reinforces those behaviors and feelings.

This practice strengthens neural pathways associated with gratitude and optimism, making it easier over time to automatically notice positive moments. Additionally, attention to positive stimuli can reduce stress and improve overall well-being by counterbalancing the brain’s natural bias toward negative information, known as the negativity bias. Essentially, training your mind to see the good rewires it to seek more of it.

comment “SWAPS” for a list of my favorite non-toxic swaps from air & water purifiers to cleaning 🧹 items

creating a non-toxic home 🏡 doesn’t have to be overwhelming — it’s about taking small, intentional steps that add up over time 🏡✨

here are some simple swaps to start with:

+ 🌿 improve your air quality with plants or an air filter (i love )
+ 🚰 filter your water
+ 🧽 swap your cleaning supplies for non-toxic options
+ 🍳 choose healthy cookware (think stainless steel, cast iron, or ceramic)
+ 🥡 upgrade from plastic to glass or stainless steel food storage
+ 🚫 minimize or avoid using the microwave
+ 🎨 use VOC-free paint when freshening up your walls
+📱 protect yourself from unnecessary EMF exposure
+🪑 shop for non-toxic, sustainable furniture

your environment plays a huge role in your overall health — from hormones, to energy, to immunity. the goal isn’t perfection, it’s progress 🙌✨

what’s one swap you’ve already made (or want to start with) to create a healthier home? 💛👇

Timing matters more than you think.

Drop pasta only once the water is at a full rolling boil so starch releases evenly.

Vegetables go in after boil to keep their color bright and their bite intact.

Eggs need a gentle lower into cold water for a clean peel later.
And dumplings are best added once the boil steadies again so they do not break apart.

Small choices in when you add food change flavor, texture, and even nutrition.

Save this as a quick kitchen reminder and subscribe to my Substack for the deeper dive on boiling science. Link in bio

Your fridge door is the warmest part of the fridge… and it fluctuates every single time you open it.

Which means your milk, eggs, cream, and soft cheeses are getting hit with the most temperature change in the entire fridge.

Meanwhile?
Ketchup, mustard, hot sauce, soy sauce, pickles; they’re built for it. Salt, acid, and sugar help protect them from spoiling as quickly.

Tiny kitchen shifts like this make a bigger difference than people think.

Save this for your next fridge reset.

I teach more of the “why” behind cooking and kitchen systems over on Substack — from heat control to food science to the small things that make cooking easier and better over time.

Tomatoes are one of those fruits that seem interchangeable until you start recognizing it’s make up…

Some break down fast.
Some stay firm.
Some turn sweet when they roast and some just make everything watery.

It’s usually the reason a sauce tastes rich… or doesn’t.
Or why one sandwich holds up and another slides apart after two bites.

There’s a reason certain tomatoes keep showing up in certain dishes.

Save this for the next time you’re standing in the produce section pretending they all do the same thing.
