Most people look for the biggest watermelon, but the field spot often tells a much better story.
That pale patch forms where the watermelon rested on the ground while ripening. A white spot usually means it was picked too early, while a creamy yellow spot is often a sign that it had more time to mature and develop sweetness.
The rind, sound, and overall appearance can also provide clues. When several signs point in the same direction, you have a much better chance of bringing home a sweet, juicy watermelon.
